M Claims.
This invention relatesto dry'shavers. and has for its principalobject to provide a device of this character that is simple and inexpensive in construction. l
Other objects of the invention are toprovide a dry shaver with a stationary blade, and a rotatable or oscillatable guard in the form of a traction. member that is adapted to be rolled over the skin to cause the hair to enter apertures therein for shearing contact with the blade; to provide a razor construction adapted for hand operation; and to' provide a device wherein the cutting blades and traction member may be formed of conventional strip stock so that they may be replaced at a minimum cost.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated-in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Referring more in detail to the drawing:
i designates a dry shaver including a stator 2. an oscillatory traction and'shearing member 3, a blade assemblyli, and a handle 5. stator 2 includes a cylindrical body having a slot 6 extending along the length thereof and intersecting an axial bore 7 to accommodate the blade assembly 4, later described. Formed about the periphery of the stator is a plurality of annular grooves 8 forming spaced annular ribs or supports 9 for the guard and traction member 3. 4
The grooves 8 intersect the slot 5 so that they provide, clearance space for the hair cut at the outer sides of the blade assembly. The supporting ribs, however, are relatively narrow but are of suihcient depth to provide the required rigidity and retain. the cylindrical shapeof the stator.
The blade assembly includes a channellike cutter H), formed of relatively thin stock having substantially parallel wings II and IZsubstantially corresponding in length to that of the stator.

The depth of the spreader preferably corresponds to the depth of the wings sothat the end edges 2| thereof cooperate with the edges of the cutterto form additional cutting surfaces.
Engaged in the bore 1, and bearing against the web I3, is a spring member 22, preferably in the form of a resilientmetaltube, slit longitudinally, of slightly Shorter length than-the rotor, and of suitable diameter to be received in the bore 1 but which is'adapted to be distorted as shown in Fig.
2 when the blade assembly is inpositio-n sothat the compression imparted therein urges the blade assembly into cooperative cutting relation with the guard ortraction member 3.
The member 3 is also of thin stock formed into 1 a'sleeve or band 23 of suitable inner diameter ell) to freely rotate oroscillate about the cylindrical periphery of the stator over which it is sleeved. The rotor has ja'plurality of circular series of slots or.openings. 24 formed therein with the slots in the respective series spaced apart from each other to form annular and transverse ribs 25 and 26 respectively. The ribs are so formed that the cross-sections thereof are V-shaped to provide cutting edges 21 and. 2t cooperating with the cutting edges of the blade to sever the hair that passes through the respective openings as the guard or traction member is moved or oscillated across the blade assembly. The outer faces of the ribs are smoothly rounded, as at 29; to guide the hair through the openings and to provide smooth contact with; the skin'which passes hair may enter therein at the point of the slot,
as when trimming. along the hair line.
j The handle 5 in the illustrated instance comprises a yoke-shaped member 3 8, having arms 32 and 33 overlapping theends, of thestater and which are clamped thereagainst by a fastening device 34, such as a bolt, extending through openings in the terminal ends of the arm and through the bore of the stator, preferably so that the bolt also extends through the sprin member 22, the bolthaving a head 35 at one end and a nut 36 at the other securely clamping and retaining the parts in assembly and retaining the handle at a fixed angle relatively to the blade assembly, as clearly shown in Fig 3, attention being directed to the clearance between the ends of the rotor and the arms which allows freedom for oscil1ation upon the stator, as later described. The yoke member also ha a handle 36 secured thereto as shown in Fig. 1.
In using the hand operated razor constructed and assembled as described, the yoke member is grasped by the fingers of the hand with thehan die resting in the palm and the thumb bearing upon the traction member, as shown in Fig. 1', onthe side opposite the blade assembly. The razor is then pressed against the skin and the traction member rolled or oscillated thereoyer through thrust of the thumb in a push and pull motion so that the cutting edgesf t the rotor move across the cutting edge oi the blades to shear off the hair that enters through the openings, and which is brought into contact with the blades, The oscillatory movement of the rotor effects rolling movement thereof" on the skin so that the opening are brought into receivin relation with the Whiskers to be severed as the cutting edges of the blade move them into shearing contact with the cutting edges of the blade.
While I have particularly illustrated and des scribed one form of my invention, it is obvious that the flexible, band-like rotor may be in the form of a continuous belt operating over a stator of suitable shape.
It is also obvious that a motor driven razor may be constructed embodying all of the features of the hand operated device, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What/I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the character described including a cylindrical stator, a support, means fixing the stator on the support, a blade assembly supported insaid stator, and a flexible metal sleeve rotatable about the stator, said sleeve having a plurality of spaced apertures forming cutting edges cooperating with the blade assembly for shearing hair passing into said apertures.
2. A device of the character described including cylindrical stator having a plurality of spaced nular ribs and a slot said ribs, a blade assemblyin said slot, a suprt. means fixing the stator on the support, and flexible metal sleeve rotatable about the stator nd supported by said ribs, said sleeve having a plurality of spaced apertures forming cutting edges cooperating with the blade assembly for shearing hair passing into said apertures.
3. In a device of the character described, a stator having a plurality of spaced ribs and an axial bore intersected by a slot opening through the stator, a blade assembly positioned in said slot including a channel shaped cutter having relatively thin flexible wing extending to the periphery of the stator, a spring member yieldin'gly retaining said wings in contact with the sides of said slot, a flexible metal sleeve movable about operating with said wings, and means yieldingly retaining said wings in cooperating contact with said cutting portions of the sleeve.

In a device of the character described, a cylindrical stator having a slot opening through the periphery of the stator, a blade assembly positioned, in said slot including a channel shaped cutter having relatively thin flexible Wings, a flexible metal sleeve movably supported on the stator and having cutting portions cooperating with said wings, and mean yieldinglyretaining said wings in cooperating contact with said cutting portions of said sleeve.
6. In a device of the character described, a stator having a slot opening through the periphery of the stator, a blade assembly positioned in said sl ct including spaced cutting members, a spring member yieldingly spacing said members, a metal sleeve movably supported by the stator and having cutting portions cooperating with said cutting members, and means yieldingly retaining said members in cooperating contact with said cutting portions of the sleeve.

In a device of the character described, a stator having a, plurality of spaced annular ribs, a slot extending transversely of; said ribs, spaced cutting means in said slot, a flexible sleeve rotatable about the stator and supported on said ribs, said sleeve having a plurality of spaced apertures having edges cooperating with the biade assembly for shearing hair passing into said apertures, and a spring member spacing said cdtting means having cutting portions cooperating with said edges.

9, In a device of the character described, a cylindrical stator having a plurality of spaced ribs and an axial bore intersected by a slot openmg through the periphery of the stator, a blade assembly positioned in said slot including a channel shaped cutter having relatively thin flexible wings extending to the periphery of the stator, a spring member yieldingly retainingsaid wings in contact with the sides of said slot. a rotor including a flexible metal sleeve movable about the stator and having cutting portions cooperating with said wings, means yieldingly retaining said wings in contact with said cutting portions, a supporting member, and means securing the sup porting member to the stator including means for retaining said yielding means.
10. A shaving device including a sleeve-like shearing member of extreme thinness to move over the skin and having an opening for the reception of hair, a cutter positioned in the sleeve and cooperating with anedge of the opening to provide a shear cut of the hair received in said opening, a support, means cooperating with the cutter for supporting the shearing member from, flexing inwardly when pressed against the skin, and means fixing said shearing membersupporting means on the support.
11. A device of the character described, including a stator having cutting -means,a guard including a flexible band having cutting edges cooperating with said cutting means and movably supported about the exterior of the stator to bring said cutting edges into successive contact with the cutting means, vmeans on the stator supporting said band from inward flexing movement when pressure is applied thereagainst, and means carrying the stator in a fixed position with the cutting mean at a fixed angle relatively to the cutting edges of, the band. v
12. A dry shaving device comprising in combination a frame, a hollow cylinder freely rotatable in said frame, the walls of said cylinder being very thin and provided with small perforations, a blade carrier fixed to said frame, a handle fixed to said frame, a plurality of cutting blades secured to said blade carrier-with their cutting edges in contact with or close to the internal surface of the cylinder, the cutting edges of said blades being spaced apart over a portion of the said internal surface and located with relation to the handle so that they are adjacent the face of the user when the device is in use; whereby by holding the device with the cutting edges adjacent the face of the user, and moving the cylinder over the face, said cylinder is caused to rotate relatively to said cutting edges;
13.,A dry shaving device comprising in combination a frame, a hollow cylinder freely rotatable in said frame, the walls of said cylinder being very. thin and provided with relatively mall perforations, and an elongated substantially U- shaped cutting element fixed to said frame and disposed within said cylinder,- said cutting element having its cutting edge in contact with or close to the internal surface of said cylinder whereby movement of the cylinder over the face of the user causes said cylinder to rotate relative to said cutting element.
14. A device of the character described includ ing an inner cutter element, a sleeve-like band of relatively thin flexible material having openings forming cutting edges cooperating with the cutter element, means supporting the cutter, laterally spacedsupporting means cooperating with the cutter supporting means to back the sleevelike band for rolling movement about the cutter, and means preventing rotary movement of the cutter element supporting means with the sleevelike band.
