My invention relates to handbags and has particular reference to ladies handbags and similar containers.

My invention has for its object to provide a handbag with compartments at the sides which can be opened without opening the bag itself.

The compartment at one side can be used for cosmetics and toilet articles, while the compartment at the other side can contain first aid articles so that the bag can be conveniently used by women engaged in war work, also for picnics, extended trips, outings, etc.

Another object of my invention is to provide a handbag with compartments at the sides having hinged covers extending to about one-half of the length of the side and so arranged that the covers, when opened, provide additional supports for the bag. The bag with the covers open can remain standing as a small first aid cabinet at one side and as a cabinet for toilet accessories at the other side, or similar utility articles.

An added storage space is also provided due to the particular arrangement of the covers.

My invention is more fully described in the accompanying specifications and drawing in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my handbag;

Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same;

Fig. 3 is an end view of the handbag with side covers opened;

Fig. 4 is a similar view, showing the toilet articles;

Fig. 5 is a front View of the bag with the cover opened, exposing first aid articles.

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the handbag in an opened position.

Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the frame of my handbag.

My handbag consists of two portions formed as frames, shown more clearly in Fig. 7, and having end walls I and 2, connected by bottom plates 22, and top bars 23. The bottom plates are hinged together at 3, the top bars having clasps 4. (Fig. 1.) The end walls I and 2 have recesses 5 for side covers I2, I3, formed as boxes and hinged at I4 to side walls 2| and 24 of the bag. The frames and the covers are preferably made of a rigid or semi-rigid material such as metal, plastic composition, fiber, wood, etc., while the side walls 2|, 24 are preferably made of a soft material such as leather, fabric, etc. The hinges I4 are therefore also preferably made of a flexible material and may be formed as a continuation of a fabric or leather 24, glued to the outer sides of the boxlike covers I2, I3.

The recesses 5 form compartments I, 8 at the outer sides of the bag under the box-like covers I2, I3 and can be used for holding various toilet articles ID at one side and first aid articles II at the other side, the articles being held in place in pockets formed by pieces of

A strap I6 is attached to the end walls I, 2 for holding the bag.

The covers, when closed, and held in place by clasps I5, conform to the shape of the bag, forming continuations of the side walls 24. The bag under the recesses 5 provide an enlarged compartment 25 for storing bulky articles, usually carried in such bags. The bag for the same purpose may be made .wider at the bottom as shown.

The hinges I4 are placed approximately at the middle of the side walls so that the covers, when opened, extend to the base of the bag as shown in Fig. 3, forming an additional support for the bag and increasing its stability when placed on a table. The inner sides of the covers are also provided with pockets I! for toilet articles I8, I9 and mirror 20 at one side, and

26, 21 at the other side. The bag then represents a convenient toilet cabinet at one side, as shown in Fig. 4, and a first aid cabinet, as shown in Fig. 5, both the covers and compartments 6, 'I being fully exposed, with the mirror in a convenient approximately vertical position.

It is understood that my handbag may be further modified without departing from the spirit of the invention, as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. A handbag comprising two frame portions having rigid end walls, rigid bottom walls and upper bars, hinges connecting the bottom portions; side walls extending from the bottom to the top of the bag made of a relatively soft material; covers at the sides of the bag made of a relatively rigid material having rigid upper walls, the lower edges of the covers being hinged to the end walls at an elevation above the bottom portions; means to support utility articles on the side walls under the covers and on the under sides of the covers; clasps for holding the frame portions together; and clasps for holding the covers in the closed positions, the covers when opened being adapted to rest against the side walls, the upper walls of the covers extending in a substantially common means to support utility articles on the side wall under the cover, the cover when opened being adapted to rest on the side wall, the open portion of the side wall and the opened cover forming a portable open cabinet for the utility articles, adapted to retain its shape when the bag is lifted by the handle.
