Description

J. J. PARKER.
Watch Spring.
No. 23,308. Patented March 22, 1859.
WZZJZ 6 6 5206. 22?? n. PETERS. Fhotailthographer. Wnihington. n. c.
J. J. PARKER, OF MARIETTA, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR EQUALIZING THE TENSION OF WATCH-SPRINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,308, dated March 22, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. J. PARKER, of? Marietta, in the county of lVashington and l State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Regulating and Equalizing the Strength or Power of Springs for Timepieces and for other Purposes; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a plan of a hollow cog wheel barrel or drum, in which a coiled spring (S as represented in Fig. 2) is inclosed, of which A is the arm, to which the cogs are attached or made. B is the head of the hollow barreled cogwheel, which can be removed for the purpose of putting in the spring. C the axis or center pin, to which the inner end of the spring is fastened. l) is a slot in the head B, corresponding to a similar slot in the opposite head of the hollow cogwheel. barrel or drum. E is a pin securely fastened to the outer end of the spring, which pin works in the slots D, in the heads of the barrel.
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the hollow barreled cogwheel, A being the rim, O the axis or center pin, showing the spring attached, E is the pin with the outer end of the spring attached, which works in the slots D.
l fl
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the axis C, attached to the stock or base F.
Fig. at is a. vertical elevation of 1. Fig. 5 represents the head of a hollow cog wheel, barrel or drum, (Fig. 1.) D bein the slot in which the pin E works; G being the hole in which the center pin or axis C works.
The operation of this improvement as follows: As the hollow eogwheel. barrel or drum is turned around in the process of winding up the spring, the spring decreases in diameter, and the pin E, being fastened to the outer end of the spring. is caused to slip and follow the spring in its contraction, in the slot D toward the center, thus iving to the cogwheel, barrel or drum the greater leverage as the spring contracts, thereby regulating and equalizing the pow-er or strength of the spring. The reverse of this takes place as the spring runs down.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Making and constructing a barreled cogwheel or drum, for time pieces, or for other purposes, so as to equalize and regulate the power of a spring in manner and form as substantially set forth.
J. J. PARKER.
