Description
J. M. STARK. Spring Bed Bottom.
No. 232,657. Patented Sent. 28,1880.
N. PETERS. PROT6-LTHOGRAFHER, WASMXNGTON. D
. UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICEO JAMES M. STARK, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO JANE A. REEVES, OF SAME PLACE.
S PRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 232,657, dated September 28, 1880.
Application filed January 8, 1880. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. STARK, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction of spring bedbottoms; an ithe invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, all as more fully hereinafter set; forth and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a frame wherein the cross-ties B are halved in and secured to the ends of the side rails. D is a series of eye-hooks which hook over the pieces B, and are secured thereto by staples E on the top and bottom of said pieces B, with the eyes projecting inward from the top of said pieces. Hooked into these eyes, at each end of the device, is the series of coil-sprin gs 2 5 F, and these springs, at one end, are connected with those at the opposite end by a series of wire loops, G H, the latter being one-half the length of the former, and hooked together, as shown in the drawings, thereby forming a 0 springbottom of great elasticity, and presenting no points for the secretion of vermin.
I employ braces I, as shown in Fig. 2, said braces being secured at their ends to the side rails, and the loop portion of said braces being 5 secured to the under side of the cross-pieces B, at three different points, as shown at a b c.
It will be observed that the central supports for the bed consist of the wire loops or stirrups H, each extending half the length be- 0 tween the head and foot rails, and provided with hooks a, at one end, engaging with the spiral spring F, and parts 0, bent rightangularly to the sides of the'stirrups, and eriinped or bent at b to engage with the hooks to of a 1,5 second stirrup, H, the bent portion c of the latter being crimped to receive the hooks of the spiral springs F, attached to the opposite end rail of the bed-bottom.
The side wires, G, are provided each with a hook engaging with ahook at the end of the spiral spring F, the opposite end of the wire G being bent right-angularly, and bent or crimped to receive the hooks ot' the spiral spring F, at the opposite end of the bottom, and then bent again right-angularly, and its hooked end made to engage with one of the crimps in the half-stirrup H.
By this construction a broad rigid bearingsurface for the'bed is obtained, and by the interlocking or engagement of the ends of the stirrups H and wires Gr all lateral movement of the wire is avoided, and each pair of interlocked stirrups is independent of the others, so that any break in one set of Wires will not affect another set, as in the case where a continuous wire is employed. The spiral springs are securely held in place when attached to hooked staples passing around the end rails, and firmly connected therewith.
It will also be observed that in my construction the tension of the spiral spring is exerted to turn or twist the end rails on their axes. This is counteracted by the braces I, applied to the under face of the bed-bottom and attached to the end and side rails.
What I claim as myinvention is In a spring bed-bottom, the combination, with the frame A, having the eyehooks D secured to its end rails, B, of the spiral spring F, having hooked ends, independent stirrups H, having hooks to and crimps I), side wires,
G, having hooked ends and erimped, as set forth, and braces I I, applied to the under face of the frame and secured to the side and end rails, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In witness that I claim the above I hereby affix my signature this 1st day of December, 1879.
JAMES M. STARK.
In presence of CHARLES J. HUNT, H. S. SPRAGUE.
