.Another object of the invention is to provide a structure of this character in which the usual wear in threaded adjustments is greatly reduced in'measuring objects that vary considerably in size, whereby the final adjustment may be made to obtain a more accurate measurement.`
A further object ofthe invention is to provide means whereby any wear in the yfinal threaded adjustment is compensated for, resulting in a more accurate measurement of the objects; and, at the same time, producing a simple micrometer which can be cheaply manufactured.

'The' inner end of the bore I9, of the'enlarged end I8,is beveled at 20 and adaptedto engage the beveled ends I4 of the spring `arms I2. "It will thus be seen that, as the tube I5 is forced outwardly by the lock nut 'I, the spring arms are forced inwardly into the cut-out portion II by engagement with the beveled portion of the member I8. Sliding on the tube 8 is the handle 2 I, which is provided with a closed end 22. Carried by the closed end is a projection 23, upon which is mounted an operating knob 24, having a slip connection with the projection 23, whereby the handle 2l can n-ot be turned beyond a certain resistance.
The closed end of the tube is provided with an l outwardly extending rod 26, which is of a diameter to freely pass through the bore of the tube I5, and is screw threaded, as indicated at 21. The outer end of the rod 26 is reduced, as indicated at 28, and Aextends through the opening 5 the anvil is provided with a large barrel 3, having c a bore 4 terminating in a small opening 5 arranged in exact alinement with the anvil 2. The l barrel is provided with a transverse slot 6, in
which is arranged the ylocking nut 1, which will` be hereinafter'more fully described.` The barrel 3 has rigidly secured to the outer'end thereof the i tube 3, having a bore 9 therein of the same size as the bore 4 and forming a continuation thereof. The inner end of the tube has marked thereon a scale I0, whereby calculations `are made. The outer end of the tube is provided with four cutout portions II forming four spring arms I2,
which have their inner faces threaded at I3,y
and their extreme ends beveled, as indicated at I4. Passing through the bore'of the tube or sleeve 8 is a tube I5 having one end threaded, as indicated at I6,` and the opposite end provided with four cut-out portions or slots I1, and beyond these cut-outl portions, the tube is enlarged, as
in the outer end of the barrel 3, as clearly shown in Figure 21 of the drawing. l
In operation, the lock nut 'l is turned on the threads I6 of the tube I5 to the right forcing the tube outwardly so as to bring the spring arms I2 from engagement with the beveled portion 29 of the enlarged end I8, whereby they are disengaged from the threads 2l, oi the rod 26, and the handle 2I isY free to slide on the tube 8 to bring the reduced end 28 in approximately the proper distance in respect to the anvil. The lock nut then is turned to the left drawing the tube I5 inwardly and locking the spring arms into threaded engagement with the handle. By a further turning of the handle, it will be seen can be nely adjusted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A micrometer, comprising a yoke, an anvil at one end, a cylindrical barrel carried by the opposite end of the yoke and provided with a transverse slot intersecting the bore thereof, a
` tube carried by one end of the barrel and having a scale on the barrel and its opposite end provided with internally threaded outwardly held spring arms, a sleeve sliding within the tube and provided with a threaded end extending into the bore of the barrel and provided with slots to receive said spring arms, an adjusting nut in the slot of the barrel and threaded thereon, a handle slidably mounted on the tube and having a rigid rod telescoping within the sleeve and provided that the same with external threads adaptedto be engaged by the threads of the spring arms, and a beveled' face carried by the inner sleeve for engaging the spring arms and forcing them into engagement with the threads on the rod.
