The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in scythes and brush hooks, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising novel means for adjustably but firmly securing the blade in position on the snath or handle.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a snath fastening means which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of -the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a snath fastener constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation thereof, showing the blade in cross-section.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the device.
Figure 5 is a view in end elevation.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a bar I of arcuate cross-section, said bar being of any suitable metal. The bar I is adapted to be mounted longitudinally on one end portion of the handle 2. Formed longitudinally in the bar I is a rib or tooth 3 which is adapted' to bite into the handle 2.
On one end portion of the bar I is an integral eye 4 for the reception of the handle 2. 'I'his end portion of the bar I also has formed integrally therewith a pair of eyes 5.
The major portion of the bar I is formed to provide a raised, flat plate 'I which terminates, at one end, in a head-like portion 8 having an arcuate series of sockets 9 therein.
The upper or inner end of the bar I has formed integrally therewith a transverse bar I0. At one end, the bar I0 terminates in apertured ears II between which one end portion of a substantially U-shaped clamp I2 is pivotally secured, as at I3. At its other end, the bar I0 terminates in an eye I 4 for receiving the threaded shank I5 on the other end of the clamp I2. A retaining nut I6 is threaded on the shank I5.
The plate 'I is adapted to receive thereon the tang I1 of the blade I8 of the implement. The
eyes 5 are for the reception of the U bolt I9 which is engaged transversely with the base portion of the tang I1 for clamping the blade I8 in position. Nuts 20 secure a bar l6 on the end portions of the U bolt I9. At its free end, the tang Il terminates in an angularly projecting lug 2I which is engageable selectively in the sockets 9 for retaining blade I8 in the desired position relative to the handle 2. On one end portion of the plate 'I, at one side thereof, is an integral iiange 22 constituting an abutment for bracing the heel portion of the blade I8.
It will thus be seen that a scythe has been provided wherein the blade may be expeditiously and firmly secured in position. Of course, the U bolt I9 clamps the tang I 'I on the plate 1. The lug 2|, being engaged in one of the sockets 9, anchors the tang I'I and positively prevents it from pulling out of the U bolt I9. By simply loosening the nuts 20 on the U bolt I9, the lug 2l may be engagedin the correct socket 9 for retaining the blade I8 at the desired angle relative to the handle 2. To remove the entire assembly from the handle 2, it is only necessary to loosen the nut I6 on the free end of the swinging clamp I2 and the nuts 20.
It is believed that the many advantages of a scythe constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
W'hat is claimed is:
A scythe comprising a metallic bar of arcuate cross section for mounting longitudinally on one end portion of a handle, an eye on one end of the bar for the reception of the handle, a substantially U-shaped clamp pivotally connected, at one end, to the other end of the bar, coacting means on the bar and the clamp for adjustably securing the other end of said clamp to said bar, the clamp being engageable around the handle for detachably securing said other end of the bar thereon, said bar including an integral, raised flat plate extending longitudinally on said bar from said one end thereof to an intermediate point, an arcuate head integral with one end of the plate and spaced from said other end of the bar, said head having a series of sockets therein for the reception of a lug on a blade tang, and a U bolt mounted on the bar for clamping the tang thereon.
