The present invention relates to a retort or other high temperature apparatus involving in its construction an annular wall portion which in use is subjected to high temperatures,
The invention, while primarily intended for embodiment in the so-called nose rings or discharge ends of limestone burners, cement kilns and other retorts, is applicable to metal confines in general which encounter excessive temperatures in service, and it will therefore be alluded to herein generally as an annular hot zone confine.
The present invention constitutes an improvement in the structure shown in Patent No. 2,089,026, granted to W. G. I-Iofiman on August 3, 1937, and involves novel means in the form of a readily replaceable shield for protection of the hot zone portion of the said high temperature apparatus. As exemplified in the said Hoffman patent, the high temperature apparatus involves the use of a hot zone portion mounted upon and forming a continuation of the body portion thereof. The hot zone portion constitutes the discharge end of the kiln or retort and has an inwardly disposed liner-retaining flange which serves as an abutment for the lining for the confine of brick or refractory material. This construction, while highly satisfactory structurally, nevertheless has inherent defects in that the said inwardly disposed liner-retaining flange is subjected to exceedingly high temperatures and the abrasive eifect of the conditioned hot clinker or similar material discharged from the said apparatus which causes the said flange and adj acent parts of the hot zone portion to deteriorate rapidly, thus necessitating its frequent repair or replacement. Because of the particular construction for the said retort, repair or replacement of the hot zone portion requires the kiln to be shut down and a part of the kiln end torn apart in order to gain access to the said hot zone portion to repair or replace the same.
The present invention has as one of its objects the provision of a novel protective shield for the hot zone portion of high temperature apparatus in the form of a kiln or retort which is readily detachably secured in protective position to said hot zone portion such that the same may be readily removed and replaced when the same has become so worn as to require replacement, thus protecting the hot zone portion and eliminating the necessity for tearing down part of the kiln or retort including the liner in order to condition the said hot zone portion.
The present invention has as a further object the provision of novel protective means comprising separately formed segments, ach readily detachably connected to a hot zone portion of a kiln or retort to provide a structure in which any or all of the said segments forming the shield may be repaired or replaced when the same become unusable in the environment in which the same are positioned,
The invention has proceeded upon the theory of providing a novel protective shield for a hot zone portion constituted by a plurality of segments each individually connected to the hot zone portion of the kiln or retort, thus enabling the said shield to expand and contract independently of the hot zone portion to prevent undesirable distorting stresses to be set up in the hot zone portion due to temperature changes.
The present inventionfurther has as an object the provision of a novel shield for a hot zone portion of a retort or kiln of segmental formation for independent expansion and contraction and to permit removal and replacement of any one or more of the same and which is adapted for assembly with the said hot zone portion, whether of segmentalor integral construction.
Other objects, features, capabilities and advantages are comprehended by the invention, as will later appear and as are inherently possessed thereby.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in end elevation of a high temperature apparatus incorporating an embodiment of the present invention in its assembly;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view in end elevation of the high temperature apparatus shown in Figure 1 of the drawing;
Figure 3 is a detached fragmentary view in elevation of the hot zone portion of the device shown in Figure 1 of the drawings; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary View in cross-section through the apparatus shown in Figure 1 of the drawing.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, an embodiment select-ed to illustrate the present invention is shown as comprising an annularshaped body portion 2 and an end or nose ring or hot zone portion 4 forming an annular confine of a retort or kiln for burning lime, cement or the like, the said end ring or hot zone portion being mounted upon and forming a continuation of the body portion 2.
In accordance with the disclosure in the Hoffman Patent No. 2,089,026, the said end ring 4 may be formed of a plurality of segments each of which is connected through the medium of bolts disposed within elongated openings, such as 6, of the hot zone portion, which permit individual expansion and contraction of the hot zone portion or end ring independently of the body portion 2 for the purpose of securing the advantages of such an assembly as clearly pointed out in the said I-Iofiman patent, although it is to be understood that the present improvement in the art is adapted for use with hot zone portions of retorts or kilns generally irrespective of their construction and particular manner in which assembled in the high temperature apparatus.
As clearly shown in the drawing, the hot zone portion or end ring 4 is provided with an inwardly disposed liner confining flange 8 having the inturned lip I in substantial abutting relation to the liner 12 which may be of brick or any suitable refractory material protecting the annular confine of the said retort or kiln. The inturned lip I0 preserves a recess I4 between the flange 8 and the liner I2 for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described.
Due to difficulties experienced in this art in maintaining flange 8 in proper condition for retaining the liner l2 in position, it has been found that considerable expense and time may be avoided by providing an annular or circular protective shield 16 covering the flange 8 and having a quarter-round nose l8 overlying the lip 16 and thus protecting the lip l0 and'flange 8 from impingement by burning gases and thereby rendering remote the necessity of removal of the hot zone portion 4. When the said protective shield has burned away or deteriorated to such an extent as to require replacement, the said shield may be removed and replaced as desired.
In order to facilitate the removal of any part or portion of this shield Hi, the same is constituted by a plurality of segments such as 20, 22 and 24, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, which are disposed about the flange 8 in protective association therewith and each of which segments is in substantial abutting relation one to the other except for slight clearance such as shown at 26 to permit independent expansion and contraction of these segments in respect to one another and to the hot zone portion 4.
In order to permit the removal of anyone or more of the segments forming the shield, the same are readily detachably connected to the flange 8 through the medium of headed pins, such as 28 and 30, welded or otherwise secured to the said segments and adapted to be received in bayonet joint slots, such as 32,.and 34, respectively. A will be noted, the heads of the rivets are disposed in interlocking relation to the flange 8 within the recess l4 to permit their movement with respect to said flangeB into and out of interlocking engagement therewith, thus enabling the user to replace any one or more of said segments conveniently and without tearing the kiln or retort end apart, which has been necessary in former constructions for high temperature apparatus.
The segments of the protective shield are each held in operative association with the hot zone temperature through themedium of the headed pins, such as 28 and 30, with the exception of at least one of said segments, such as 22, which, .while provided with pins, such as 28 and 39, received within the bayonet joint slots'of the adjacent flange 8, nevertheless is welded to the next adjacent segments, such as 20 and 24, as by means of weld deposits 36 and 38, which serves to position the remaining segments in interlocking relation to the flange. This provides a novel arrangement for replacement of any of these segments in that the weld joint may be broken at any time to remove the segment 22 and thus facilitate removal of the remaining segments through relative movement in respect to the flange 8 to disengage the headed pins from the bayonet joint slots formed therein.
As will be clearly appreciated, the individual segments of the protective shield may be of some suitable heat-resisting alloy or metal capable of withstanding high temperatures to thus increase the length of useful service, and that when replacement becomes necessary, the same may be effected at any part of the protective shield because of the ready detachability of the said shield with respect to the flange 8. Thus the hot zone portion including its liner-retaining flange 8 is protected at all times, preventing deterioration thereof which, if replacement should become necessary, would involve the tearing down of the end of the kiln or retort, with the usual loss of time involving considerable expense. Therefore, in accordance with the present invention, the arrangement of the protective shield to the hot .zone portion of the kiln or retort is such that the hot zone portion will outlast several sets of the usual or ordinary hot zone portions such as shown in the Hoffman construction, and accordingly the present improvement greatly decreases the cost of operating one ofthese high temperature apparatuses.
While I have herein described and upon the drawing shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but may comprehend other constructions, arrangements of parts, details and features without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A retort or the like, comprising a body portion including a nose ring, a lining for said retort, said nose ring having an inwardly-presented liner-confining flange disposed adjacent the outer facing of said liner and in spaced relation outwardly from the inner marginal face of said liner, and a metallic protective shield for said flange having a nose extending axially of said retort and overlying the inner marginal edge of said flange.
2. A retort or the like, comprising a body portion including a nose ring, a lining for said retort, said nose ring having an inwardly-presented liner-confining flange, said flange and liner being so constructed and arranged as to provide a recess therebetween, said flange having a plurality of openings, a metallic protective shield fitting over said flange and having a nose extending axially of said retort and overlying the imier marginal edge of said flange, and a plurality of securing elements connected to said protective shield and extending through said openings into said recess and having shouldered engagement with said flange for readily detachably connecting said protective shield to said flange.
3. A retort or the like, comprising a body portion including a nose ring, a lining for said retort, said nose ring having an inwardly-presented liner-confining flange formed with an inturned lip preserving a recess between said flange and said lining, said flange having a'plurality' of openings,
a metallic protective shield fitting oversaidflan'ge and having a nose overlying the said inturned lip of said flange, and a plurality of securing elements connected to said protective shield andextending through said openings into said recess and having shouldered engagement With said flange for readily detachably connecting said protective shield to said flange.
4. A retort or the like, comprising a body portion including a nose ring, a lining for said retort, said nose ring having an inwardly-presented liner-confining flange, said flange and liner being so constructed and arranged as to provide a recess therebetween, said flange having a plurality of bayonet joint slots, a metallic protective shield composed of segments fitting over said flange, said protective shield having a nose extending axially of said retort and overlying the inner marginial edge of said flange, and a plurality of securing elements connected to said segments eX- tending through said openings into said recess and having shouldered engagement with said flange for readily detachably connecting said segments to said flange, and means for connecting at least one of said segments to the next adjacent segments to position said shield with respect to said nose ring.
5. A retort or the like, comprising a body portion including a nose ring, a lining for said retort,
said nose ring having an inwardly-presented liner-confining flange formed with an inturned lip preserving a recess between said flange and said lining, said flange having a plurality of openings, a metallic protective shield fitting over said flange and having a nose overlying the said inturned lip of said flange, and a plurality of securing elements connected to said protective shield and extending through said openings into said recess and having shouldered engagement with said flange for readily detachably connecting said protective shield to said flange, said securing elements being connected to said shield in substantially flush relation to the outer surface of said protective shield.
6. A nose ring for a retort or the like, comprising a metallic member having one or more parts provided with a portion for securing said nose ring in operative position in said retort, said nose ring being further provided with an inwardly extending flange adapted to confine a lining for said retort, said flange being formed with an inturned lip adapted to cooperate with said lining to preserve a recess between said flange and said lining when said nose ring is in operative position in said retort, and said flange having means for connecting a protective shield thereto.
