Description
G. W. HOLMES. Oven for Drying Fruit.
(Model No. 232,033. Patented Sept. 7,1880,
n VILII/IIII I II \llitlu! N. PEIERSA FNDTO LIYNOGRAPKER, WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. HOLMES, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
OVE N FOR DRYING FRUIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,033, dated September '7, 1880.
Application filed July 6, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HOLMES, of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ovens for Drying Fruit and for other Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccoi'npanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in ovens for drying fruit and for other purposes, and it has for its object to provide a portable apparatus which can be employed in connection with any ordinary stove or heater and by means of which the fruit can he subjected to the action of a regulated heat, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved drier, showing the door thereof partly open; and Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of my improved drier, showing the method of ventilating the drying chamber thereof.
The letter A indicates a rectangular box, formed with double walls B, except at the forward end, which is open. The bottom of said box is depressed, as ind'eated by the letter C, so as to set in the opening at the top of a stove or other heater, and the top of said box is provided with a tube, I), through which the space between the double walls may be properly charged with water and whereby the steam generated in said space may escape.
At the front of the drier, at each side of the same, are provided grooved guides or ways E for a sliding door, E, which are provided with openings G, by means of which communication between the dryingchamber H and the external air may be established.
The exterior wall of the door, at each side of the openin g tll6I'Bill,IS provided with grooved (Mo dcl.)
guides or ways I, between which is adapted to slide a valve or damper, K, having an aperture, L, which may be brought opposite the openings in the walls of the door, inorder to establish communication through said openings between the drying-chamber and the external air.
The interior of the drying-chamber, on opposite sides, is provided with horizontal longitudinal flanges M, for supporting the shelves N, upon which the fruit to be dried is placed.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood in connection with the above description, and is as follows: The vessel or box is placed upon a stove or other heater, with the depression at the bottom setting in the aperture at .the top thereof. The space between the double walls is filled with water, and when heat is applied it is transmitted by means of the water to the drying-chamber containing the fruit. By means of the sliding valve in the door of the apparatus the heat of the drying-chamber maybe regulated by opening the valve to a greater or less extent, as may be required.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An oven for drying fruit, consisting of a rectangular box constructed with double walls, except at one end, and with a depression at the bottom to set in the opening of a stove, the said box being provided with horizontal flanges on the inside to support a series of trays, and with a sliding door having a sliding valve adapted to be operated to establish communication between the interior of the oven and the open air, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of June, 1880.
G. W. HOLMES.
Witnesses M. KEATING, O. W. GROSSLAND.
