SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,942, dated September "7, 1880. Application filed November 4, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAIVI S. TOTHILL, of Chicago, Cook county, State ofIllinois,have invented a new and useful Improvement in Swings, (Case A,) of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in'which- Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2, a vertical cross-section; Fig. 3, a'side elevation of the seat or chair enlarged, and Fig. 4 a front view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 also show a modification of the seat-supports.

The object of this invention is to improve the construction and operation of the swing patented to me July 30, 1878, No. 206,406 and its nature consists in an improved method of attaching the operating-cord and the arm, and in the construction, attachment, and operation of the seat, as hereinafter described.

In the drawings, A indicates an ordinary door frame or casing; B, the swinging bars; C, a pivoted yoke or bar for connecting the operating-cord; D, a projecting bar or bracket attached to the top of the frame; E, the seat or chair; a, the operatingcord b, the point of attachment; 0, a sheave or pin; 6, cord or cords for holding the yokeC f,rear posts of the seat; g, front posts; h, seat; 5, base-rails; 1', footboard; jj, cords or hook for holding the seat, back, front, and foot-board in position; Z, pivots of the rear and front posts of the chair, and is k pins for adjusting the pitch of the chair back and front when the cord j is used.

The supporting-frame is an ordinary door frame or casing upon which the swinging bars B are hung, and upon which the projecting bar or bracket D is supported, making a complete support for the swing for indoor use. For out-of-door use a separate framing is made to take the place of the door casing or frame by similarly connecting the swinging bars and the bar or bracket D thereto.

The bars B are made by splitting a single piece with a saw or otherwise into two parts, B B, or in other suitable manner.

The posts B B are held apart by cross-bars, as shown, and at asuitable distance above their lower ends the seat It is attached. To this seat or to its supports the back and front of the seat are pivoted, forming a chair. At the lower ends of the posts f and g the bars 6 are alsopivoted, so that whenever the back is tilted either up or down the bars i and the foot-rest i will maintain their relatively-horizontal position as they move up and down.

When in the position shown the back, seat, front, and foot-rest assume the form of a chair; but when the cord j or ratchet-j is released these several parts come nearly or quite into line, so as to form a bed or cradle.

The device is supportedin intermediate positions by the cord j and a series of pins, k k, or by the ratchet-notches. This seat or chair may also be supported by the parts B B from the floor, so as to be separately used.

The yoke or bar C is pivoted to the bars B when in yoke or bow form, and to one of them when in bar or rod form, and is held in position for use by the cord or cords e, which cord I permits of the folding down of the yoke for storage or other purpose. The cord at is attached to this yoke at b, carried up and around the sheave or pin 0, and extended down so as to be within convenient reach of the occupant of the chair.

By extending out the bar or bracket D over, or nearly over, the yoke or bar C, the power applied to the cord has a much greater effect in moving the swing than when the sheave c is near to or at the line of the pivots of the bars B; and by the arrangement of the bar i and foot-board or bars 4." they are at all times horizontal whatever the position of the front and back may be.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the sheave or pulley c, horizontally-projecting bracket D, and cord at with the projecting yoke or bar C and the swinging bars B, the cord at being attached to the yoke and passing over the pulley, whereby a direct leverage on the swinging bars is obtained, substantially as specified.

2. The pivoted yoke or bar C, in combination with the swinging bars B, and the cord or cords e, cord a, attached to said yoke, bracket D, and pulley 0, whereby the yoke is held firmly against the pull of the operating-cord and free to be folded down without detaching any of the parts fastened thereto, substantially as described.

3.
