No. 2 3l,868. Patented Aug. 31,1880,

PATENT FFHGEO ASSIGNOR TO ISAAC SAGHUSETTS.
V s. PEAR, or
FOLDING CAMP-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,868, dated August 31, 1880.
Application filed To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSHUA TURNER, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Camp-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, convenient, and compact folding camp-chair of-that class having an elastic or yielding bottom and back support, and wherein the seat-frame folds together from its" sides toward the center, the back-supports folding therewith simultaneously and toward each other until they meet, so -as to form a convenient handle, whereby the camp-chair may be conveniently carried; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of the pivoted back-supports to the bottom portion of the back pivoted cross-legs and their connection with the rear ends of the side pieces of the seat-frame by means of sliding screwrings or staples connected therewith, and through which they pass or slide, so as to permit the chair to fold up, as hereinafter more fully described and set forth.
Figurel represents a perspective view of my invention in an open position. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of the samein a closed position. Fig. 3 represents a rear elevation of the same when open.
A A represent the front cross-l together at their point of crossing by means of the rivet or bolt 0, which passes horizontally through the same.
B B represent the rear or back pivoted together in like manner at their point of crossing by a rivet or bolt, 0. These front and rear cross-legs are connected together near their lower ends by the horizontal rounds D D, one end of which is permanently secured within holes formed in the front cross-legs, A A, their opposite ends passing through the egs, pivoted cross-legs,

which fit within holes formed horizontally through the back-supports or standards F F, which are connected with the rear ends of the side pieces, E E, of the seat, which are connected rigidly with the upper ends of the front 5 5 and back cross-legs, A A andB B, by means of dowels or tenons formed thereon, or in any other suitable manner, so as to form a side frame or support for the canvas or other flexible bottom, H, which is secured to said side rounds or supports, E E, by being passed over the upper and outer sides thereof and fastened at each end with nails or otherwise, thus formin g a central or inwardly-foldin g seat, as shown.
To the rear ends of the side pieces, E E, of the seat are connected staples, loops, or large screw-eyes L L, of sufficient size to permit the back-supports or standards F F to pass through, and, when the camp-chair is folded, permit the said screw-eyes to slide upward on the standards or back-supports F F, the upper portions extending some distance abovethe said seat or bottom H, and are provided with a canvas or otherflexible back-rest'or back-support, K, secured at each end to the standards F F with nails, or in any other suitable manner, so as to allow the cam p-chair to fold up, as shown I in Fig. 2, the said canvas back-piece K being folded around the upper ends or top portions of the said standards F F, so as to form a eon- 8o -venient handle to carry such camp-chair by whenever desired.
It will be seen by Fig. 3 that the back-standards F F incline outward from their point of connection with the rounds D at their lower 85 ends to their upper ends, thus serving to increase the width of the said back-support by an increased length of the canvas K, which insures sufficient flexibility to adapt or permit the said canvas to fit the formation of the back, 0 thus forming a very easy and comfortable support or rest therefor.
Having thus described my invention, what rear cross-legs, B B, and projecting a short distance beyond, as shown, the round D projeetin g through the rear cross-leg, B, farther than the round D does through the other rear cross-leg, B, both being of an equal length, and provided at their outer ends with an ex- 50 tension made smaller, forming tenons c c,
1 claim isl. In combination with the inwardly-fold- 5 ing cross-legs A A B 13, provided with the rounds D D, extending rearward through the cross-legs, the back-standards F F pivoted thereto, and connected to the rear 'ends of the side pieces, E E, of the flexible seat H by the I00 sliding loops or screw-eyes L L, and provided F, pivoted at their lower ends and joined With at their upper portions with the flexible backthe side pieces, E E,of the folding seat-frame 10 support K, all being constructed and arranged by vertical sliding connections, substantially to fold up substantially in the manner deas and for the purposes set forth.
scribed, as and for the purposes set forth. JOSHUA TURNER.
2. In combination with front and rear cross- Witnesses: legs, AA and B B, which fold from the sides SYLVENUs WALKER,
inwardly, as described, the back-standards F ISAAC S. PEAR.
