GRAIN- DRIER.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,861, dated August 31, 1880.

Be it known that I, CHARLES SPOFFORD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, county and State of New York, am the inventor of certain Im- My invention relates to an improved graindrier, consisting of a slightly-inclined horizontal cylinder placed upon wheels, which wheels are located so as to revolve on pins fixed i n trunnions, in combination with spirallywound steam coiled pipes, whose sides lie close to and touch each other, placed on the interior of said cylinder and so arranged that the grain or material to be dried shall pass through the cylinder over the heated coiled pipes in such a way as to avoid clogging, and yet so that each particle of the material to be dried is caused, by the revolution of the heated cylinder, to come into contact with the heated surface or steam-pipes, thus insuring a more completeas well as a more thorough drying of each particle of the material than has hitherto been done.

G G are arms or rests, two on the outer side of each raised piece, on which the cylinder D (the outer cylinder) rests, and'in which it re volves by means of the wheels at d. F is the space or chamber inside of said cylinder D. The interior of this cylinderD is lined, as
it were, with the spirally-coiled steam-pipes E, the same being in a continuous piece to allow the transmission of steam from one end to another. At the one end of this steam-pipe is the induct steam-pipe g, which is connected to and with the coiled pipe E, and by which steam is introduced into the said pipe E, and
on the other end is a conduit-pipe, through which all steam and the water caused by the condensation of steam are carried off and not allowed to remain and cool the chamber F. The steam-pipe may be completely shut off from contact with the material to be dried by the use of another and inner cylinder or jacket, G, which,bein g made of thin metal, allows the heat to readily pass through and dry the grain.
Thesteam may be passed into the chamber, or, if used, into the coiled pipes, by means of any of the common mechanisms now in use. There may also be used a feeding apparatus, whereby the material is carried into the chamber F, and a receptacle for receiving the said material as it passes from the cylinder after having been heated. Afanning-power maybe located at the feeder for the purpose of fannin g or dusting the grain as it passes into the cylinder F.
It will be observed that when the inner jacket or cylinder G is not employed, as in Fig. 1, the grain or material to be dried is brought direct into contact with the grain, and as the cylinder revolves falls directly upon the steampipes, and in the revolution of the inclined cylinder is carried forward to the discharge.
Around the outside of the cylinder D may be placed a jacket or covering of any suitable material which will act to retain the heat in, asitis generated by the steanipassing through the pipes in said cylinder, thus giving a greater drying power.
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A grain-drier composed of the cylinder D, which is slightly inclined and horizontal, with an outer jacket or covering, in combination with the coiled steampipe E, coiled against the inner side of the said cylinder D, the coils touching each other, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
