of Cleveland, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and Im-' iiis'rrnn STATES PATENT WILLIAM L. MILLER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
REVERSING AND CUT-OFF MECHANISM FOR/STEAM-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,834, dated August 31, 1880. Application filed J 11110 24, 1880. (No model To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. MILLER, county of Ouyahoga and proved Reversing and (JutOff Mechanism for Engines, of which the followingis a specification. 7
The object of my invention is to dispense with the guides, cross-head, and link required in reversing mechanism of usual character, andto move the valves for cutting off and reversing by the use of a single eccentric.
My invention consists in an eccentric-disk carried by a disk on the en glue-shaft, and fitted for being moved thereon to shift the cocentric in a plane at right angles to the shaft. This movement may be obtained by a lever or by a rack and pinion connected with a slide on the shaft, for movement by hand or by a governor.
The construction and operation will be more particularly explained with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved devices as applied to a valve. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on line as m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig.4is a side view of the eccentric disk detached, and. Fig. 5 is a side view of the eccentric-strap.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a shaft, which maybe the driving-shaft of the engine or a secondary shaft driven from the main shaft. a. is a circular disk secured on the shaft A, and formed with a block, I), of rectangularform projectingfrom its inner face. 0 is the eccentric-disk, the same being a circular disk having a slot across its central portion for the block b to enter. d is a flange extending radially from disk 0 to confine the oil on the eccentric. cis the eccentricstrap, which, as shown most clearlyin Fig.5, is a ring having an oval aperture the shorter diameter of which corresponds with or is slightly greater than the disk 0. Thestrap c is formed in two portions, united by screws, as shown, to allow tightening of the strap, as required. f is the eccentric-rod, shown as connected to a slidevalve, g, of the engine-cylinder h. n is a cirlow the shaft A, and
cnlar disk on Aaft A, on the side of strap 6 opposite to disk to, and attached to said disk by screws. 6 z are racks fixed on one side of disk 0 at opposite sides of the central slot, the
.disk n being slotted to give space for the racks.
k is a pinion or grooved roller fitted in suitable bearings on the outer face of disk at. l is a sleeve or collar on shaft A, having connected with it a rack, m, that extends upon the shaft through the disks (0, 'n, and c, and engages with pinion k. 0 is a lever pivoted beforked to engage by pins with an annular slot in the collar Z, so that said collar and the rack a may be moved endwise of shaft A by means of the lever.
It will be seen that the eccentric-disk 0 may be shifted more or less to either side of shaft A by movement of the collar l and rack m, such movement acting through pinion k on the racks i to move the disk 0 horizontally and at right angles to the shaft A. The block 1) acts as a guide for the disk 0 during such movement, and the eccentric-strap c is swung by disk 0, thereby reversing the valve or cutting off steam at any point in the stroke and maintaining the lead. The pinion and racks will be proportioned so that the full movement of rack or in either direction will givea half-revolution to the disk 0. The lap and lead may be given, as desired, by placing the cross-slat of disk out of center-that is to say, more or less above or below the horizontal axis of the disk.
This mechanism is simple and durable. The eccentric-strap can be readily taken off and set up without interfering with the other parts, and the racks will have but slight wear on account of their long bearings. The device is also much cheaper, and occupies less space than the ordinary mechanism using two eccentrics and a link. The eccentric-rod may be connected to the rocker-arm of the valve mechanism or connected directly on the valve-stem.
The mechanism may be applied to locomotive or stationary engines. It maybe used both as reversing and cut-off mechanism, and may also be used with a governor of any usual character, and the governor fitted to move the lever 0 for opening or closing the valves more or less at each stroke.
