RAILROAD-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,755, dated August 31, 1880.
Application filed June 12, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM BROWN, of
Territory of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Railroad-Tie, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a stronger, more durable, and economical railroad-tie.
The invention consists of a hollow iron railroad-tie, of rectangular cross-section, having a concave bottom, and having end ledges formed on its top to prevent the spreading of the rails.
Figure l is a perspective view of the tie with sections of rails set therein in position, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional side elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the tie, having a concave bottom, as shown at a, with vertical sides and flat top, the bottom of the said tie being-longer than the top and the ends thereof sloping upward and inward, as shown at On the ends of the top of the tie the transverse ledges b are formed, which prevent the outward spreading of the rails 13 B, that are set against them, and also lessen the strain upon the bolts 0 O, that hold the said rails down in position.

claim as new and desire. to secure by Letters Patent- A hollow iron railroad-tie constructed substantially as herein shown and described, having a concave bottom, sloping ends, and provided with transverse ledges across its top ends, as set forth.
