1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for handling fallen incendiary bombs.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a trap-Iike structure whereby an incendiary bomb can be trapped or captured and carried to a safe place where it can be permitted to consume itself.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device for handling active incendiary bombs in a convenient and safe manner.
These and other important objects and advantages of the invention will become appare-.nt to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the trap.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view.
Figure 4 is a section on the line li-I of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional View taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 denotes an elongated handle which is secured by metal straps 6, 'I at its forward end to an elongated rectangular-shaped box structure 8. This box structure is open at its front side where a door 9 is secured in place by hinges I I). As is apparent in Figures 4 and 5, the box-like structure 8 and the door 9 have an asbestos or other fire-proof lining I I.
Mounted upon the box-like structure 8 is a bracket I2 supporting a bellcrank I3, the bellcrank being fulcrumed to the bracket I2 at its heel portion and by a suitable means I4. A link extends from one end of this bellcrank I3 to a lug I 5 secured to the door 9.
From the other end of the bellcrank I3 extends a rod I6 which connects to an intermediate portion of a hand lever I1 swingably secured to a bracket I8, the latter, in turn, being secured by bolts or the like I9 to the elongated handle 5.
A cross bar 26 extends longitudinally on, the lower portion of the door 9, the ends of which project beyond the ends of the door and have apertures to receive the ends of tension springs 2|.
The tension springs 2I extend to connect to lugs 22 on the end walls of the box-like structure 8.
It can be seen, that in approaching a bomb, the hand lever I'I is pulled back, to open the door 9 and when the trap has been positioned with the bomb under the door 9, the hand lever I'I is released, and the spring 2| will snap the door 9 closed, kicking the bomb into the box-like structure 8.
The box-like structure can now be carried to a window or out of doors to a safe place where it can be released.
While the foregoing speciiication sets forth the invention in specic terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a device for handling incendiary bombs, a pole-like handle, an elongated rectangular box structure xed to one end of the handle to extend lengthwise across the same and having a hinged downwardly closing front door, means to yieldingly close said door comprising a bar extending along the bottom edge of the same beyond the ends of said structure, a pair ci coil springs at opposite ends of the structure attached to said structure and to the opposite ends of said bar, and means to open the door comprising a pivoted lever upstanding from said handle, a bell crank pivotally mounted on top of said structure in upstanding position, a rod operatively connecting said lever to one arm of the bell crank, and a link operatively connecting the other end of the bell crank to the door in front thereof.
