2 Claims. (Cl. 242-124) My invention relates to winding and reeling devices of the general type forming the subject matter of my copending application, Serial No. 378,280, filed December 10, 1941, and over which the instant invention is designed as an improvement.
The principal object of the instant invention is to provide reel equipment for mounting on a farm tractor and drive therefrom and which embodies simplified, structurally improved features adapting the same for either winding up barbed wire without entangling the sam with the reel parts, or unwinding of barbed wire from commercial rolls of the same.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.

Reference being had to the drawings by numerals, and first to Figures 1, 2, 4 and '7, illustrating the preferred embodiment of th invention, the reel I comprises a pair of annular end members 2 having spokes 3 fixed, as at 3', to and radiating from skeleton hub members 4 rotatably mounted in laterally spaced relation on a fixed spindle 5 having an inner end secured in a bracket 6 bolted, as at I, to one side of the chassis 8 of a tractor. A set collar 9 on the outer end of the spindle 5 is provided to confine the outermost end member 2 against movement outwardly of said spindle.
The hub members 4 are provided with lateral circumferential flanges I0 facing inwardly of the reel I, and tapered in that direction, and which are designed to frictionally fit in the opposite ends of a core II which is cylindrical with the exception of flaring ends I 2 thereon.
A pair of keepers I3 are provided upon opposite ends of the core I I which have the form of a continuous rod-like frame of substantially oval form with a pair of intermediate arcuate side stretches I i fitting on opposite sides of the core I I and welded thereto, the welding not being shown. As will be understood, the keepers I3 provide dia metrical end loops in a common radial plane upon diametrically opposite sides of the core I I, respectively, and the keeper I3 are arranged in the same angular position on the core II and close to the spokes 3 of the end members 2 within the confines of said members. For cooperation with the keepers I3, in a manner and for a purpose presently seen, each end member 2 is provided with a rod-like, circumferential wire guiding rim I5 offset inwardly of the reel from the plane of the spokes 3, and said rims I5 surround the keepers I3. The inner hub member 4 has extending laterally therefrom, inwardly of the reel I, a pair of diametrically opposite pick-up studs Iii for a purpose presently explained.
A fastener finger I1 is bolted at its inner end, as at I8, to the outer face of one end member 2 with an outwardly offset outer end and apertured, as at I9.
The described reel I is designed to be driven, as represented at 8', from the power take-off shaft, not shown, of the tractor and through the medium of a beveled gear 20 rotatable on the spindle 5 between the bracket 6 and the reel I and which is suitably connected to the hub member 4 of the adjacent end member 2, as by a pick-up stud shown in dotted lines at 2I in Figure 4 and extending into an aperture in said hub member.
The reel I is designed for reeling up barbed wire II one end of which is attached to the apertured end of the finger I'I, the wire being trained from said finger across the adjacent end member 2 of the reel for winding on the core II. Thus, the keepers I3 maintain the wire on the core I I during winding and the inwardly olfset rims I5 prevent the wire from catching on, or between the keepers I3 and the spokes 3 of the members 2. When the wire is wound into a roll, the core II may be removed, together with the roll, by detaching the set collar 9 from the spindle 5 and also the outer end member 2 from said spindle and then pulling the core I I off the flange I0 of the inner end member.
My invention also comprehends adapting the described reel, in part, for unwinding commercial rolls, not shown, of barbed wire, which rolls are equipped at each end with a pair of keepers 22, similar to keepers l3, suitably fixed to the ends of the rolls and crossed in the axis of the rolls, all of which being well known in the art need not be further described. In the use of the invention, the core H is removed and a commercial roll of barbed wire sleeved over the spindle 5 between the hub members 4 and against the flanges ll] of said hubs, as shown in Figure 3. In this position of the roll, the described pick-up studs I6 extend in between the sides of one of the keepers 22 so that under rotation of the inner end member 2 of the reel the studs will pick up said keeper and rotate the roll together with the other end member 2 in the proper direction to unwind the roll. Also, in this use of the invention, the rims l5 cooperate with the keepers 22 in the same manner as described with reference to the keepers [3.
In Figures 5 and 6, a further modification has been illustrated in which a core 23 for the reel l is provided which is longitudinally split with its split edges 24 one lapped over the other so that the core is contractible to facilitate withdrawing the same from a roll of wire wound thereon. The core 23 is designed to fit over the hub members 4. A pair of internal ears 25 are provided adjacent each end of the core 23 on the inner face thereof for drawing together to contract said core. Bolts 26 threaded through the ears of each pair provide for drawing the same together. A pull ring 21 is provided on one bolt 26 for use in pulling the core 22 out of wire Wound thereon.
The core described in the immediately preceding paragraph is for use in winding up old barbed wire, or smooth wire which is to be discarded and when filled to be taken from the reel I so that it can be withdrawn from the wire wound thereon and replaced in the reel I for repeated use. This saves discarding the core with the discarded wire the advantage of which will be appreciated.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention is susceptible of modification in other respects than as herein disclosed, without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a reel for barbed wire, a spindle adapted to be mounted in fixed position, a pair of annular end members including hubs rotatably mounted on said spindle in laterally spaced relation, one of said members being adjustable on said spindle toward the other, said hub members having tapered annular edge flanges, and a tubular core interposed between said members in surrounding relation to said spindle and having flared *ends frictionally fitting over said flanges and retained thereon by adjustment of said one member, and a pair of substantially oval-shaped guards formed of rods on opposite ends of said core, respectively, for preventing the wire from fouling said members, said guards extending from diametrically opposite sides of said core and having intermediate curved portions fitting around opposite sides of said core.
2. In a reel for barbed wire, a spindle adapted to be mounted in fixed position, a pair of annular endmembers including hubs rotatably mounted on said spindle in laterally spaced relation, one of said members being adjustable on said spindletoward the other, said hub members having tapered annular edge flanges, and a tubular core interposed between said members in surrounding relation to said spindle and having ends frictionally fitting over said flanges and retained thereon by adjustment of said one member, and a pair of substantially oval-shaped guards formed of rods on opposite ends of said ccre, respec tively, for preventing the core from fouling said members, said guards extending from diametrically opposite sides of said core and having intermediate ourved portions fitting around opposite sides of said core, said end members having rod-1ike rims offset laterally thereof into the plane of said guards to prevent the wire from catching on said members.
