Description
J. MERCIER DEFORMABLE 0R ELASTIC ACCUMULATOR Filed Sept. 13, 1938 JE/9N, MERC/EE' Nun--71" 7% I Patented Apr. 27, 1943 2,317,395 DEFORMABLE OR ELASTIC ACCUMULATOR Jean Mercier, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France; vested in the Alien Property Custodian Application September 13, 1938, Serial No. 229,641 In France May 3l, 1938 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to accumulators of liquid under pressure of the type including a rigid container for said liquid and a flexible deformable and'preferably elastic bag filled with gas under pressure. said bag being fixed to the inner wall of said container and acting as a partition between the liquid in the container and the gas cushion imprisoned in the bag and which serves to keep said liquid under pressure.
The object of the present invention is to provide an accumulator of this kind which is better adapted to meet the requirements of practice than those used for the same purpose up to the present time.
With this object in view, according to a feature of the invention, I provide means for guiding the displacements of one end of the bag with respect to the container, said means consisting of two elements, one rigid with the container and the other carried by the bag, slidably mounted on each other.
Other features of the present invention will result from the following detailed description of an embodiment thereof, given by way of example and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing the accumulatorcomprisesacontainer I inside of which is located an elastic and expansible bag 5. This bag preferably consists of a synthetic substance analogous to indie-rubber. This substance must also be of a kind which is not attacked by the oil such, for instance as a product of polymerisation, a polyvinilic alcohol, styrol etc. Obviously ordinary indie-rubber or another plastic material could also be chosen provided it will not be attacked by the two fluids which will make contact therewith. This bag 5 will be simply connected to the container I at 6. The bag 5 effects a tight separation between the variable volume chambers 2 and 3, one of which contains for instance oil and the other a gas, thereby avoiding any risk of an emulsion of gas in the oil. Bag 5 also follows the variations of the volume of space 2 under the effect of the oil pressure in space 3. The pressures are in ordinary conditions practically equal inside and outside ball 5; However, bags of that type are usually inflated to high pressure, consequently, when the fluid stored under pressure is rapidly withdrawn and particularly if all fluid should be drained from the container, as will frequently occur in an emergency, then differences of pressure may arise between the inside and outside of bag 5 to which the same could not resist without injury. To avoid any such risk the bag is provided with a safety device which will permit venting the same whenever the pressure outside of bag falls below a predetermined value. v
To that end bag 5 may be guided, for instance by means of a rod- I2 passing through said bag 5 and secured at its ends in a suitable manner upon the wall of container I. In this case, the
bag 5 will be slidably secured to rod prefer.- ably at I3 by means of a reinforced part I4. The fastening will be optionally executed in such manner that the compressed gas inside bag 5 can escape through the joint between rod I2 and the Wall of element 5 when the inner pressure exceeds in a dangerous manner the outer pressure.
The outletconduits disposed on the bottom 01 the receptacle I at 4 may be protected by a perforated screen I5 to retain particles which might be produced by a deterioration of element 5.
The foregoing description is not; intended to limit the present invention which extends to all changes, modifications and equivalents within the scope of the appended claims.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An accumulator of liquid under pressure which comprises, in combination, a rigid container adapted to be fed with said liquid, :1 flexible deformable bag in said container fixed at one end thereto and filled with gas, said bag being provided with a hole at its other end, arod rigid with said container, and an annular elastic reinforcement carried by said bag around said hole thereof, tightly applied on said rod and slidable thereon, whereby the second mentioned end of said bag is guided in said container.
2. An accumulator of liquid under pressure which comprises, in combination, a rigid container adapted to be fed with said liquid, a flexible deformable bag in said container fixed at one end thereto and filled with gas, said bag being provided with a hole at the other end thereof, a rod rigidly fixed to the part of said container where said bag is also fixed thereto, and an annu end, a rod rigidly fixed to said container at the part thereof where said bag is also fixed thereto and extending through said bag, said rod and said part of the container being provided with a conduit for forcing gas under pressure into said bag, and an annular elastic reinforcement carried by said bag around said hole thereof, tightly applied on said rod and slidable thereon, where by the second mentioned end of said bag is guided in said container.
JEAN MERCIER.
