SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,653, dated August 31, 1880,
Application filed May 3, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MvRoN UoLoNnY, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented Improvements in Breech-Loading and Magazine Fire- Arms, (Case K,) of which the following is a specification.
The subjectof the first part of my invention is a revolving magazine consisting of an annular series of chambers surrounding the barrel and revolved intermittently by a pawl, which engages with a follower in each magazine-chamber in succession as said chamber is depleted, so as to bring a new chamber into position to comm unicate with a breech-slide, by which the cartridges are conducted from the magazilie-chambers to a position in rear of the barrel for firin The invention further relates to the combination, with a firing-pin which is cocked automatically by the explosion of the charge, of a pair of trigger-bolts engaging alternately with said firin g-pin and retractedalternately at each movement of the slide.
The rotation of the magazine and the retraction of the trigger-bolts are both effected by connection with the same mechanism which moves the slide.
In the accompanying,drawings, Figure l is a side view of a portable cannon illustrating the invention, omitting the carriage. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the magazines detached. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the said cannon. Fig. at is a rear view of the magazines, showingthe barrel in section. Fig. 5 is about view. Fig. 6 is a rear view of the breech only on larger scale. Fig. 7 isa perspective view of a flanged cap employed to cover the ends of the magazines. Fig. Sis a perspective view of the complete gun on a smaller scale. Fig. 9 is a side view of a shoulder-gun illustrating the invention.
The barrel is mounted on a stock or carriage, as the case may be, of any suitable construction, and is surrounded by an annular magazine consisting of a concentric series of chambers, I, and adapted to TOX'OlVG within a cylindrical casing, H, The chambers I are provided with the customary spring-followers L, actuated by spiral springs, which bear against the annular head 0.
The magazine is secured in the casingH by a flanged plate, N, in front, and at the rear end by an annular plate or head, which confines the cartridges in their chambers, and is provided on opposite sides with openings to feed the cartridges successively to the chambers of the loading-slide D, so that as each diametrizontal position their rear ends will register with the aforesaid feed-openings. a conducting-tube being interposed in the case ot alneech-loading cannon to carry the 'artridges past the trunnions to the chambers of the slide. The slide D is moved by a hand-lever, S, on a shaft, F, carrying gear-wheels U U, which mesh with suitable racks on the, slide.
The shaft F extends forward as far as the rear face of the magazines,where it is provided with an arm connecting, by a link, K, with a segmental slide, J, guided in a slot in the rear face of the magazine-case, and having on its lower end a tooth adapted to engage with the projecting stud of the magazinet'ollower L, when the depletion of that particular magazinechamber brings the said follower and its stud in line with the said slide J. It will thus be manifest that in the reciprocation of the loadingslide the oscillation of the slide will have no effect to revolve the magazines until the particular magazine-chamber which is feeding is depleted. At this time the neXtmovement of theloading-slide will cause such rotation of the magazines as to bring the next magazine-chamber into feeding position.
The operation of the chambered breech-slide in covering the openings of the magazinechambers and in conducting the cartridges to tiring position I have fully described in an earlier application for Letters Patent, also the mechanism by which the tiring-pin is cocked by the force of the explosion.
The second part of my present invention re- I lates to a device by which the automatically cocked firing-pin is released to effect the explosion by the same movement which operates the loadingslide D. To this end I employ a pair of tappet-shafts, B B, actuated by the le l l l l l r cally-oppositc pair of chambers reach a horiver S at the termination of each stroke, and having on their rear ends arms RR, connected with trigger-bolts A A, the construction and operation of which are bestillustrated in Figs. 3 and 6. The said trigger-bolts are arranged, as shown, at an angle of about ninety degrees from each other, and are pressed inward toward the firin gpin by a crescent-shaped spring, Gr, fixed at its center to the breech and bearing by its extremities on studs upon the trigger-bolts. The said trigger-bolts are adapted to engage alternately with the cocking-notch in the firing-pin 0, either trigger-bolt which is at the time being in the innermost positionas shown, for example, by A in Figs. 3 and 6bein g effective for cooking the pin, while the other trigger-bolt, A, rests on the side of first trigger-bolt, A, as shown. The parts being in these positions and the pin cocked ready for firing, the movement of the lever S to the right, as shown in Fig. 3, will retract the trigger A by the action of the arm R, releasing the firing-pin, so that it will be thrown for ward by its spring and explode the charge, while at the same time the second trigger-bolt,
A, dropping beneath the face or extremity of being formed with a straight face on one side to permit the removal of the slide when necessary.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of the annular magazine H I, lever S, shaft F, connecting-link K, pawl or slide J, and follower L, for eliecting the intermittent rotation of the said magazine, as explained.
2. The combination of the revolving magazine, the reciprocating slide J, and the follower-stud, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the revolving magazine H I, the reciprocating chambered slide D, the shaft F, provided with pinions to move the said slide, and an arm and pawl to rotate the magazine, substantially as set forth.
4.. The combination of the firingpin O and the trigger-bolts A A, pressed radially inward in contact with the said firing-pin, so as to engage automatically and alternately therewith, either bolt when cngaged holding the other out of lock and releasing it when rctracted from the firing-pin.
5. The combination of the firing-pin G, trigger-bolts A A, lever S, shaft F, t-appet-shafts B B, and arms R R, for operating said trigger-bolts, substantially as described.
