SAMUEL MURBJY,.OF MCOONNELSVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN H. MURRY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, IND., AND SAMUEL A. MURRY, OF PEORIA, ILL.
BOX-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 231,604, dated August 24, 1880.
Application filed March 23,1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MURRY, of Mc- Oonnelsville, in the county of Morgan and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Box-Clamping Device and Gage for holding the various parts of a box or caddy firmly together while nailing them, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boxclamping machines in which two or more parts of the box are held firmly clamped together while the nails are being driven into them; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a clamping device that will hold any two or more right-angular parts of a box firmly clamped together, with their edges parallel to each other, whether one or more boards overlap the others, as in caddies, where the sides project beyond the bottom, or as in common boxes, where the sides and bottom are even; second, to afford facilities for clamping the various parts of a box and prevent the splitting of the boards while nailing them together; third, to provide suitable gages for adjusting various parts of a box and holding them firmly in position until nailed. These objects I accomplish by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a top view of the device, showing one side of a box secured by the clamps. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the end and one side of a boxclamped, ready for nailing. Fig. 3 is a top view, as in Fig. 1, with the side of the box removed from the clamps. Fig. A is a side elevation, same as in Fig. 2, with the side and bottom of the box removed from the clamping device; and Fig.5 is a side view of one of the clamp-blocks.
Like letters refer to like parts throughout the various views.
A represents a base or frameof wood, with two legs, A A which are designed to rest on a bench. The left-hand end of the frame Ais perforated with ahorizontal rectangular slot, B, in which the bolt D operates and forms a means of adjustment to the block B.
The clamp block B is constructed with an angular part, B Fig. 5, which fits on the corner of the frame A, the part B resting on top.
This block B is provided with a hole, O in which is inserted a slide, 0, the front end, 0, of which is beveled and projects a short distance beyond the block B to farm a recess, 0, Fig. 3, with one beveled side to hold the board K close to the frame A.
The slide O O is provided with a slot, 0 Fig. 3, in which the screw f operates, thus preventing the'slide from coming out, and at the same time permitting it to be moved horizon tally in the hole 0 so that the beveled end 0 will impinge against the side of the board K and force it up tightly against the front vertical side of the frame A.
The block B is made adjustable longitudinally of the frame A by the bolt D, nut D, and slot R, for the purpose of adjusting the block to suit the width of boards to be nailed together.
The right-hand end of the frame A, on its front vertical side, is provided with the movable vise-jaw L, the lower end of which is pivoted to the leg A by the bolt r. Near the upper end of the vise-jaw L, on its side, is pivoted the button m, having a notch, m, in its outer vertical corner. The space 8, between the button m and front vertical face of the frame A, is to receive and hold one edge of the board K. The notch m is designed to hold one edge of a board, while the other or opposite edge is held by the block B outside of the slide 0 O.
The lever P is pivoted to the frame A at 1). Its front end is curved and provided with a flange, p, which projects over the vertical edge of the vise-jaw L and holds the upper end of said jaw close to the frame A.
On the top of the jaw L is secured a strap, a, the other end of said strap being secured to the upper side of the lever P, as shown.
On the top surface of the frame A are secured the gages G G, having slots, in which the screws I I are inserted, and by means of which the gages are held at any required adjustment. The front ends of these gages are turned up or provided with the ends art for the edge of the top board, K, to rest against.
Having thus described the construction and arrangement of parts, I will now describe its mode of operation as follows, to wit: The board K is placed vertically against the face of the frame A, between the vise-jaw L and block B, with its upper edge flush with the top of the frame. The board K is then laid on top, with its rear edge against the ends a a of the gages G G, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The lever P is then raised, forcing the jaw L against the edges of the two boards on one side, while the two opposite edges of said boards are forced. against the block B. While held in this position the nails 1) b are driven through the upper board, K, into the lower board, K, the clamp prex'enting the boards from splitting.
It is obvious that it the sides of the box are to project below the bottom, as in caddies, the gages G G may be adjusted to allow them to project beyond the bottom the required distance; or the bottom may be flush with the sides, if desired.
In the manufacture of caddies or other hardwood boxes the utility of my device is apparent, first, because the boards are held in a vise, which prevents them from splitting while being nailed; second, the boring of holes to prevent splitting, which has heretofore been required, is obviated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a box-clamping device, the frame A, provided with a horizontal slot, R, combined with the adjustable block 13, also provided with a hole, 0 and slide 0, the adjustable gages G G, the vise-jaw L, and lever P, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
2. In a box-clamping device, the adjustable block B, with slide 0, combined with the visejaw L, the cover P, provided with the flange p and strap a, and the gages G G, as described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL MURRY.
