Description

(No Model.)
H. H. HEOK & D. REED.
Churn.
No. 231,575. Patented Aug. 24,1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY H. HEOK AND DAVID REED, OF SULLIVAN, INDIANA.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,575, dated August 24, 1880. Application filed May 4, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY H. EEG]: and DAVID REED, of Sullivan, in the county of Sullivan and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of our improved churn. Fig. 2 is a view of the dashers and operating mechanisms detached, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 00 00 in Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to that class of churns in which the dashers have a vertical reciprocating motion; and it consists in the combination, with the churn box or body, of a removable central diaphragm or partition provided with an upright having pivoted latches or fastening devices, and provided, also, with an adjustable cross-bar or lever operating suitable dashers, as hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The body of our improved churn consists of an oval or oblong box, A, provided with two half-covers, which are hinged to the opposite upper edges. The sides of the box are provided at the center with vertical grooves B B, to accommodate a removable partition, 0, havin g perforations D D.
Secured to the upper end of the partition 0 is an upright, E, which projects up through the covers of the box, which are held closed during operation by latches F, pivoted to the sides of said upright.
G is a lever, pivoted upon upright E by means of a key, H, which passes through one of several openings, I, in the said upright, thus making the lever Gr adjustable as to height.
J J represent the dasher-sta-ffs, which are pivoted to lever G on opposite sides of its fulcrum. Each of these staffs is provided with several perforations, K, through any of which the pivoting pin or key L may be passed, thus making the dashers adjustable to correspond with the height at which the lever G is pivoted. The dasherstaffs, which pass through suitable openings in the cover of the churnbox, are provided at their lower ends with semi-oval disks M, fitting in the compartments in the churn-box formed by the central partition, 0. Above the disk M each of the dasherstaffs is provided with an additional disk, N, held loosely in position by means of a key or pin, 0. Disks M N are provided with perforations P.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of our invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
By operating the lever G the dashers are alteruately raised and lowered, thus forcing the cream back and forth through the perforated partition. By this double action the cream is thoroughly and rapidly cut and stirred, and the butter caused to come in very short time and by little labor.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with the ch urn-box A, having grooves B B and hinged half-covers, of the removable partition (3, having upright E, provided with pivoted latches F F, suitable dashers, and an operating-lever, Gr, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY HARVY HEUK. DAVID REED.
