v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JANE HENRY AND JAMES B. SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
URINAL FOR INVALIDS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 231,487, dated August 24, 1880, Application filed March 17, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Mrs. JANE HENRY and JAMES B. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Urinals for Invalids; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved device to be employed by persons afflicted with incontinence of urine; and it has for its object to provide a means of retaining the urine as it is discharged until it may be transferred to a suitable "essel or finally discharged. This object we attain by the device shown in the accompanying drawing, in which The letter A indicates a sack or bag, con structed of water-proof material and of any convenient shape, in the present instance being in the form of an oblong flat bag. The said sack or bag has a neck, B, open at its upper end, and is provided at its lower end with a discharge-opening, C.
At the narrow portion of the neck B is secured at short tubular section or annulus, E, which serves to keep the neck distended at such point, and from such annulus or extension extends into the sack a short flexible tube, F, which is preferably contracted toward its lower end. a
The discharge-openingO is provided with a short nipple, G, screw-threaded externally, which serves to keep said opening distended, and also as ameans for securinga short tube, H, internally screw-threaded and provided with a flexible tube, I.
The neck B is provided with loops K, of flexible or other material, through which is passed a strap, L, by means of which the device may be secured to the body of the patient. In using the device the neck of the same is passed over the penis of the male, or secured against the external parts of the vagina'in the female, and held in position by means of the strap secured around the body in any convenient manner. The'urine as it is discharged passes through the nipple G and into the sack or bag A, and its return or escape through said tube is prevented by the flexible nature of the tube, the pressure of the urine in escaping causing the tube to collapse and seal the same.
When the device is to be used during the night, while the patient is in bed, the flexible tube I is secured to the discharge end and extended from under the bed-clothing to a urinal or other collecting-vessel. During the day, when the patient is in an erect position, the flexible tube is removed, and a screw-cap, M, is substituted therefor, which retains the urine until it is convenient to discharge it.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a urinal for invalids, the sack A, provided with the screw-sleeve nut or nipple G, to adapt it to connect with the bent tube H or the cap M at will, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
MRS. JANE HENRY. JAMES E. SMITH.
