FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,480, dated August 24, 1880. Application filed May 3, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS DowNEs, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Water-Filters, (not patented to me, `nor with my knowledge or consent, in any foreign country,) of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of' waterfilters in which the uniiltered water passes from a refrigerating vessel or tank in the upper part of the apparatus through a conduit or pipe to the bottom of the filtering medium, and thence up through the latter to a watersp'ace surrounding the aforesaid refrigeratingtank.
The invention consists in an improved combination and arrangement of the internal parts of theV water filtering and cooling apparatus, whereby the same is rendered adjustable and capable of being readily repaired and maintained in proper working condition, all as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims;
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure lis an elevation of the water-filter with the front half of the case removed to show the interior arrangement. A denotes the outer case of the water ltering and cooling apparatus, formed of a cylindrical or other desirable shaped deep body provided with a water-tight bottom. Y B is a vessel or tank tapered from-the top to the bottom, and provided on top with an outward-turned rim or ange, b, by which it is `supported on the top edge of the case A.
fj' are two perforated diaphragms arranged in the lower compartment of the case and containing between them t-he packing or filtering medium C.
The lower diaphragm is supported a sufficient distance above the bottom of the case to form underneath it a chamber or receptacle, R, for the sediment of the water in process of lterin g.
cis a pipe extended from the tank B through the two diaphragms f j' and the interposed packing C, and communicating with the bottom chamber, R.
The pipe cis screw-threaded externally, and by means of mits n a applied thereto at opposite sides of the lower diaphragm f the said parts are connected.
Upon the upper diaphragm f is placed a cone-shaped brace, c, through the center of which the pipe c passes. By means of a nut, a', on the said pipe at thc top of the cone c, any desired pressure can be applied to the latter, which, in turn, transmits said pressure to the diaphragm f, upon which it rests.
The base of the cone, by its annular enlarged and concentric bearing, distributes the pressure over the diaphragm and braces the same. This adjustable connection of the upper diaphragm with the pipe c furnishes a very simple and efficient means for conferring the desired degree of compactness to the iiltering material interposed between the two diaphragms.
The upper extremity of the pipe cprotrudes through the bottom ofthe tank B, and is provided underneath the same with a nut, r, and a washer or gasket interposed between said nut and the under side of the tank, which, in conjunction with a nut, s, on top of the bottom ofthe tank, forms a water-ti ght joint around the pipe.
d is a skeleton-cone having near its base a detachable cross-bar, c, provided with a screwthreaded central aperture, by which it is screwed on the upper extremity of the conduit c. Within the cone d is placed a sponge, which, being brought to bear on the end of the pipe c, serves to strain the water before it enters the said pipe. By screwing down the cone d the pressure of the end of the pipe c on the sponge can be increased, so as to compress the latter any desired degree, andthus regu- ICO late the flow of thc water through the same. rIhe cone (I, bearing with its base against the bottom of the tank, serves, in addition to the functions before described, to draw the tank B downward, thus firmly securing it in its position, and at the same time tightening its joint with the top edge of the ease.
It will be observed that bythe described combination and arrangement of thc internal parts of my improved tiltcrer the sponge, while perfectly secure in its position, is easily accessible for cleaning` or renewing.
By removing the sponge-holder and the nut s the tank B can be taken out and cleaned or repaired when necessary. The removal of the tank gives access tothe water-space above the filtering medium, and if ity is desired the latterean be cleansed,without disturbing itin its position, by closing the upper end ot' the pipe c and pouring water into the compartment above the iiltering medium. The stoppe:` t' at the base of the ease A being removed allows the water, as it issues from the bottom ot' the filtering medium, to escape through theopening at the base ot' the case. This dreuching process carries oft' the impurities which have accumulated in the filtering material, and also washes out the bottom ofthe case.
My improved arrangement ot' the internal parts ofthe apparatus also allows the same to be drawn bodily out ot the case without the necessity of unsoldering `ioints or rupturintI other permanent parts.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the ease A, ot' the tank B, secured removably in its position by its top rim,b, resting upon the top edge of said ease, and by the screw-threaded pipe c, passing through the diaphragms ffand through the bottom ot' the tank B, and provided atopposite ends with tightening-nuts, substantially as set 'orth.
2. The combination, with the case A and the removable tank B, of the pipe c, conned at its lower end and havinga screw-threaded upperend, and the spon geholder eonsistin g of the skeleton-cone d and the cross-bar e, connected detachably therewith and provided at its cellter with a threaded aperture tted to the threaded end of pipe c, substantially as shown and described.
3. In combination with the packing C, the diaphragmsff, externally-threaded pipe c, nut u, cone r, and nut n', substantially as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
4. rIhe combination and arrangement, with the case A, of the diaphragms ff, packing C, threaded pipe c, nuts n n', cone e, removable tank B, and the sponge-holder d, having the femalethreznlcd cross-bar c, all substantially in the manner described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
