CURTAIN-FIXTURE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,279, dated August 17, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALICE GOSAND, of Kokomo, in the county of Howard, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Fixtures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in curtain-fixtures; and it has for its objects to provide means whereby a curtain or shade may be supported in front of a window and adjusted at any desired height with respect thereto, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I accomplish by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front view of a win dow, showing my curtain-fixture applied thereto; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view through a portion of the curtain-fixture; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the fixture, and Fig. 4 a transverse horizontal section.

The letter A indicates two ways, one located at each side of a Window, the said ways being formed each of two guide-rails, B, secured to a suitable backing adapted to be fastened to the frame of the window at each side thereof. The said rails are provided with longitudinal grooves O, in which are fitted and adapted to travel the slides D, consisting of strips of metal of suitable dimensions. The said slides, about midway between their two extremities, are provided with lugs or cars E, between which are pivoted the levers F, which are formed with longitudinal flanges G on opposite sides.

To the upper ends of the two levers are secured the opposite ends of a transverse ourtain-rod, H, to which the curtain is secured at its upper edge.

The letter I indicates a coiled spring interposed between each lever F and slide D, below the pivotal points of said levers.

The curtain-rod H is so secured to the levers that its ends extend over the guide-rails before mentioned in such manner that they will be held automatically, when the levers are in a normal position, against the edges of the rails, so as to bind thereon and hold the slides and their levers at any desired position in front of the windows.

The lower ends of the levers F are provided with finger-buttons K, by means of which the said ends of the levers may be depressed, so as to relieve the ends of the curtain-rod of their bearing against the edges of the rails and permit the slides, with their levers and curtainrod, to be freely moved up and down in the ways.

The rails near their upper ends are provided with recesses L, in which the ends of the curtain-rod are engaged and held when the curtain is fully elevated or in its normal position.

The operation of my invention will be fully understood from the above description without further explanation.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the ways or guides adapted to be attached to opposite sides of a window-frame, of the sliding plates and their pivoted levers, carrying a transverse curtainrod at their upper ends, and the interposed coiled springs for holding the levers in a normal position in the recesses in the rails of the ways, and for binding the said rod against the edges of the rail to hold the curtain in an adjusted position, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
