Description

(MadeL) I H. ELRUSSELL, Jr.
Chain Bolt.
No. 231,195. Patented Aug. I7, 1880 STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. RUSSELL, JR, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO RUSSELL & ERWIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CHAIN-BOLT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 231,195, dated August 17, 1880.
Application filed March 13, 1880.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY E. RUssELL, J r., of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohain-Bolts, (Case 1),) of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to furnish additional security against the detaching of a chain by an unauthorized person, or from the outside of the door,-and also to bring the several parts into the most compact and convenient form for use. I accomplish these objects by means of a spring-latch, and assembling the parts compactly and as near as possible in the same pieces of metal.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of said bolt; Fig. 2, a horizontal section taken longitudinally through the middle of the bolt, and Fig.
3 is a rear elevation of the same.
A designates the case of the bolt and latch for securing the chain, and B designates the keeper. 0 designates the door-bolt proper, which may be of any ordinary construction,
2 and which engages the mouth of the keeperB in the usual manner. This keeper B has also attached to it the staple a, to which one end of the chain D is secured. By the side of this staple and in the same piece of metal there is 0 a vertical slot, 1), which is widest at its middle portion and narrow toward each end. The opposite end of the chain D is secured by means of a staple to the head 0, which is of circular form and provided with an annular 5 groove. The opening I) in the keeper is at its middle portion of a size which will admit the inner end of the head 0, and the thickness of the metal in the keeper is such as willpass into the annular groove in the head 0. The ends of the opening I) are of a width which is less than the diameter of the end of the head 0, so that by passing the head through the middle of the opening I), and then slipping it toward the lower end, the metal in the front plate of 5 the keeper B will engage the neck formed by the annular groove on the head 0 and hold that end of the chain in place. This opening is made with a narrow neck at each end, so that the keeper may be used when either side up. The inner end of the case A is also pro- (ModeL) vided with an opening, (I, enlarged at one end and bearing the same relation to the chain-head 0 as that head bears to the opening I) in the keeper, and this end of the chain may be placed in the opening (I and held therein, as represented in the drawings, and it can only be detached therefrom by slipping the headin the opening cl to the point of its enlargement.
In order to prevent the chain from being easily detached by a person reaching his hand through the partially-opened door from the outside, I employ a spring-latch, 0, having a knob or button, k, which fills the enlarged end of the opening (I. This spring-latch is provided with an operating-handle, m.
To insert the chain-head c in the opening d it is placed against the button it and crowded inward, when the spring-latch will yield and admit of the insertion of said head, and so soon as the head is brought into the narrow 7o portion of this opening (I the spring latch will come into its former position, with its button k in the enlargement of the opening I).
In order to detach the chain from the case A the button is depressed through the operating-handle m, and while so depressed the chainhead is detached. This would be a difficult operation to perform from the outside of the door when a short chain was employed, and the device secured with one end of the chain attached to the door and the other end to the casing by means of the case A and keeper B, so that the door could be but slightly opened.
The door-bolt C will be used when it is desired to secure the door in a closed position. Although I prefer for convenience to embody this device in connection with this door-bolt C, it might be employed without said bolt, and the spring-latch and its case may be employed with a different kind of a keeper or fastening 0 for the opposite end of the chain.
The free end of the chain carrying the chainhead 0 will be suspended by the keeper B when not in use as a fastening device.
When the door-bolt C is not employed the 5 open mouth for the end of the bolt to enter will be omitted, the keeper being otherwise the same, except, perhaps, it might be made a little shorter.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The case A, provided with enlarged opening d, the spring-latch, and its button for filling the enlargement of said opening, in combination with the chain and its annular grooved head, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. In a door check and bolt, the combination of the following elements, viz: first, the chain D and its button v, provided with the annular groove; second, the keeper 1 having: the open mortise upon one side for the reception of the doorbolt and the eye or opening b upon the opposite end and open at the front, said eye being Widest in the middle; and,
third, thcdoor-bolt O, the case of which is prol vided with means for receiving and holding the head 0, whereby said parts may be used either side up to adapt them to a right or left hand door, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the case A, provided 20 eye I) and the open mouth for receiving the 25 end of the bolt (J, all combined and operating together substantially as and for the purpose described.
