VENTILATING AND DANIPER ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,139, dated August 1'7, 1880.

To all whom @t may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. ALLEN, of the city and county of Camden, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilating and Damper Attachments to Gas-Flues, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the attachment embodying my invention as applied to a stove. Fig. 2 is a front view thereot'.

My invention consists ot' an improvementin Ventilating and damper attachments to heating apparatus, as will be hereinafter set forth.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a vertically-arranged pipe, which is connected to the gas iue or pipe-of a stove or heating apparatus, said flue or pipe being shown in dotted lines, as at (t, Fig. 1. To the lowerend ofthe pipe A is connected a horizontally-extending pipe, B, which is passed under or along the side of the ash-pit of the stove, and appears at the front thereof, where it is provided with a valve, damper, or register, O.

It will be seen that when it is desired to ventilate the apartment in which the stove is located the register is opened and the air ot' said apartment is directed to and into the pipe B, and thus discharged into the gas-flue A. The heat of the apartment may thus also be conveyed to or toward the floor thereof for warming the same and displacing the cool and damp air of the apartment, which is carried off through the pipe B.

In the event of raking the tire or removal of ashes, Sto., from the pit or sweeping ot' the room or existence of odors therein, the open register permits the passage of such created dust or existing odor to enter the pipe B, and the escape ot' the same to the gas-tine, the conduit of dust from the ash-pit being ospecially occasioned by the juxtaposition of the mouth ofthe pipe B to said ash-pit.

Another advantage ofthe open pipe B is its adaptability as a damper for the tire, as is evident.

When the attachment is not required for service the register is closed.

Owing to the siinpli'ity of the attachment, the pipe B may restdirectly on the lioor without other means of support.

l am aware that it is not new to connect to the elbow-joint of a stove-pipe a Ventilatingpipe which extends vertically and has its lower end open, so as to communicate with the apartment in which the stove is placed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a heating apparatus and the vertical pipe A,of theorwardlyprojecting horizontal pipe B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. rIhe vertical pipe A and horizontal pipe B, with a valve or damper, C, combined and operating with a heating apparatus, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
