PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES BRAOE, OF FROSA, TEXAS.
CHURN SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters -PO4WER.
Patent No. 231,000, dated August 10, 1880.
Application filed J une 24, 1880. (Model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES BRACE, of Frosa, in the county of Limestone and State of Texas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Churn-Powers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of refer ence marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front view of my improved motor, partly in section, and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the cross-head.
This invention has relation to improvements in churn-motors wherein rotary motion is con verted into reciprocating motion and it consists in certain novel combinations of parts, as hereinafter fully shown and described.
In the annexed drawings. the letter A designates the base of the motor, having erected thereon the three parallel uprights B B B". Between the uprights B B is arranged a master gear-wheel. O, actuated by a crank or other mechanism, and engaging a small gear or pinion, I), keyed or arranged upon a short shaft, E, havingits bearings in the upper ends ot'the said uprights, as shown in Fig. I. This shaft is provided atits end, contiguous to upright B, with an enlarged head, a, through which is formed a perforation, t. at right angles t0 the axis of rotation of the said shaft, and a screw-threaded perforation, '21, ending at perforation t and at right angles thereto. In
the upper end of the upright. B is a secondshaft, F, having its axis of rotation in line with that of shaft E, and, like it, provided with a head, I), having the through-pertbration c and the threaded perforation c.
G indicates a double crank, composed essentially ot the wrist or pin 0, having the central collar, I), and the cheek-arms c, titted removably on the ends of said wrist and extending up through the perforations 11 and c of the heads a and b.
The shanks of the arms 0 are provided with notches or depressions d at regular intervals, and move readily endwise, being adjusted to regulate the throw of the crank by means of the set-screws 8 extending through the perforations t" e of the heads and engaging the depressions d aforesaid.
H H designate pitmen, having at their upper and lower ends, respectively, the eyerings ff, that are passed upon the wrist of the crank and over the ends of a cross-head, I, moving vertically in guides g on the inner faces of the uprights B B. The rings f of these pitmen are maintained against the collar b by means of the sleeves 9, applied on the wrist inside of the cheeks of the crank.
The cross-head I is constructed with a horizontally-vibrating hinged gate, h, which opens for the admission of the dash-rod J of the ch urn, 1 ecesses ot' hal'firound t'orm being formed in the contiguous faces of the body of the cross-head and of the gate for its reception. The gate is caused to clamp the rod against the body of the cross-head by a set-sc1ew,k, extending through threaded perforations therein. The cross-head is illustrated in Fig. 2. By regulating the throw of the crank the movements of the plunger may be regulated ac cording to the. quantity of cream in the barrel K and according to the height of the barrel itself.
If desired, instead of the master-gear and pinion above described, in instances where a long stroke of the dash-rod is required, as in large barrels, I may use rag or chain wheels connected by an endless chain-belt.
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a churn-niotor. the parallel uprights B B, the shafts E F, journaled in their upper ends, and provided at their adjacent ends with the heads a I), having through-holes t' c and screw-holes t" c: the crank G, having cheekarms 0 extending up through perforations i c and provided with depressions d, the set-screws s, the pitmen H H, cross-head I, and guides g, the whole combined and arranged to operate substantially as specified.
2. In a churn-nmtor, the combination, with the frame B B, guides g, and cross-head I, of the shafts E F, in line with each other, and having the heads a b, the double crank (Jr, adjustably secured to said heads, the pitmen H H, connecting said cross-head to the crank, and the dash-rod J, secured to said head, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES BRAOE.
