Specification 4of Letters Patent No. 23,078, dated March 1, 1859.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, T. D. BnowN, of Montville, in the county of Geauga and State ot' Ohio, have invented a new and uset'ul Improvement, which I denominate acDriving-Line Supporter,7 and T do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view or' the line supporter, and Fig. L), a sectional View of parts thereof.

Ar Fig. t is a metallic st ap, which extends along the bach strap ot the harness, upon the horses rump. This strap A., may be longer or shorter te suit the size of the horse.` lt is represented in the drawing as broken, to show that it may be longer or shorter, as may be required. This piece is attached te the back strap, by a short pin or stud B. F ig. 2, which rises about the tenth of an inch, and passes through a hole in the back strap ot the harness, and is secured in that positionby an iron or other metallic clasp C, Figs. l and 2, which is iirst slipped upon the baci; strap, withthe open part beneath, and then shoved back to a position that will bring the center of the clasp over the pin B. This clasp will remain firmly in its place, the pin B, acting as the tongue ot' a buckle, and preventing the piece A., from moving baclward or ton Yard. But it can be moved forward or backward at pleasure, by shoving ott the clasp `from the pin, and placing the pin in another hole in the back strap, and replacing the clasp upon the pin as before.

Toward the rear end of the strap A, is riveted a cross piece D. This piece D is placed at right angles to the piece A, about two and a half inches, or three inches from the back end D. This cross piece D, together with the end D, is covered with leather,` or otherwise mounted to agree in style of finish with the other parts of the harness. This piece D, is curved as seen in the figure, for the purpose of fitting the horse, and is held laterally in place by having the strap A, pass between and beneath the crupper or caudal strap of the harness.

There is erected upon the part D', the standard for supporting the lines. `This consists of a foot piece E, firmly riveted to the piece D, and a standard F, which screws into, the foot piece E, so that it can be changed for a longer or shorter one, at pleasure. The standard F, has two arms G, G, curved inward and upward at their extremities, forming a loop or stirrup, in which the lines are intended to rest while the horse is in motion. The standard rises above the pieces G, G, to any desired height, and may be pinioned off in any desired style. The whole ot the standard may be plated or otherwise inished The nature of my invention consists in placing on the horses rump an attachment, constructed, arranged, and secured as described, so that the arms G, G, shall be directly over the tail. Said attachment is for the purpose of supporting the lines out of the reachof the animals tail, and thereby prevent its becoming entangled in the lines while driving.

I am aware that eyes, or rings, called terrets, secured in the saddle, or to the head gear, of the harness, for supporting, and' more especially for guiding, the lines are in very common use-but the construction, arrangement, and location would be of no avail in effecting the object of my invention: that is, to prevent the animal from throwing histail over the linesmsuch, there fore, I wish to be understood as not claiming, but confine myself strictly to the arms G G with turned up ends, for the purpose of keeping the lines from slipping oli', and to release them readily when required, when the same is used in combination wit-h the other described parts of it, and for the purpose specified.

l/Vhat I claim and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, as a new article of manufacture, is-

An attachment, or line supporter, to be placed on a horses rump, by securing it to the harness in the manner shown, or in any equivalent way said attachment consisting of the adjustable strap A, pin and clasp B and C, cross Apiece D, adjustable standard F, and arms G G, the whole arranged and combined as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
