H. SCHONIWITZ TRACTION INCREASING DEVICE FOR DUAL vmmans Filed June 12, 1941' z'sneets-sneet z Attorney Patented Dec. 8, 1942 FFICE Y TRACTION INCREASING DEVICE FOR DUAL WHEELS Homer Schoniwitz, Alexandria, La. Application June 12, 1941, Serial No. 397,775 1 Claim. '(Cl. 152-220) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in traction increasing devices and more particularly to an appliance for dual wheels.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a traction increasing device which can be readilyinstalled on dual wheel assemblies where at present it is diflicuit to apply traction increasing device due to the close approximation of the wheels.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the'reader of the following specification.
- In the drawings: 4
e 1 represents a side elevational view of a dual wheel assembly with the traction increasin: devices installed.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the structure shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the annulus.
Figure 4 is afragmentary side elevational view showing a pair '01 the traction increasing elements. I
Figure 5 is a top plan view,of one of the traction increasing elements.
Figure dis a perspective of one of the keys.
Referring to the drawings wherein like nushaped annular trough tion 01 the present invention is disposed.
this annulus 9 is provided with circular laterally disposed bosses Ill shaped openings in the disks 1. Obviously, the disposition of these bosses into the openings of the disks prevents rotation of the annulus 9 independently of the wheel assembly. Furthermore, the dual wheels have to be separated before the annulus can be applied.
The traction increasing devices each consists of T-shaped cleats II, which include a base plate l2 and ribs l2 projecting radially from the wheel. A segmental annularplate l3 extends inwardly which fit into correspondingly and through the between the tires M on the rims 6 and each segment I 3 has two shanks l5 which are disposed into corresponding recesses l6 in the annulus 9. The plate l3 has its side walls dared to provide a broad peripheral surface l3 to which the base plates I 2 of the cleats are welded in obliquely disposed position.
Extending transversely through the annulus 9 bosses l0 are openings l1 certain of which register with notches l8 in the shank l5. v
When the shanks i5 have been properly fitted into the pockets l6 of the annulus 9, pins l9 can thusprevent the traction increasing elements from becoming displaced with their cleats ll bridging the tires M in the manner shown'in Figure 2.
One end of each of the pins or keys I9 is bent to provide a snap fastener 20 which can be snapped into one of the openings i1, thus preventing accidental displacement of the key from its detent acting position.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention inspecific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing claimed hereinafter. 1
'Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: In a dual wheel assembly including a pair of wheels detachably connected together and having outer parts diverging outwardly to provide an annular space between them which is of substantially V-shape in cross section with said parts having lateral holes therein, an annular member of V-shape in cross section fitting in the V-shaped space and having bosses at its sides fitting in the holes in the divergent parts, said annular member having radiating sockets opening out through its outer circumference, a plurality oi. segmental members 'having inwardly extending shanks thereon for fitting in the sockets, means for detachably holding the shanks in the sockets and lug carrying members connected with the outer edges of the segmental members and extending over tread portions of the dual wheel assembly.
