The present inventi and useful improvem mowing machines, re
ents in endless sickles for apers, harvesters, etc., and
as hereinafter set fort acier embodying a no rangement whereby m ability will be attain minimum.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a sickle of the aio 'ementioned character which is operablewith e general satisfaction in eithe Another important object of provide a roller chain sickle of scribed of such construction as tially no obstruction material thereover.
Another object of th a cutter bar of uni endless roller cha Other .obj ects a roller chain sic direction. the invention is to to oier substanto the passage of the cut e invention is to provide que construction on which the in sickle is operable. y of the invention are to provide kle of the aforementioned character which Will be comparatively simple in construction, compact tured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still-further objects and advantages of the invention will become apfrom a study of the following specificaken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate correspond several views, and w Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a roller chain sickle constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing one of the blades separated from the chain Figure 2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of an intermediate portion of a cutter bar on which the sickle is operable, portions of said bar being omitted, the guards being shown in horizontal section.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view through the cutter bar with the sickle mounted thereon.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference numeral I designates generally a roller chain, which chain is to be endless. 'I'he chain I comprises what may be referred to as alternating, pivotally connected units or sections A and B. The sections A includes vertically spaced, horizontally extending upper and lower links 2 and `3, respectively, having apertured end portions 26 in which reduced end herein on relates generally to new f the character de` bject to provide, in a manner, h, a device of this char vel construction and ar` aximum strength and dured and wear reduced to av ual emciency and in any desired ing parts throughout the tively,
v jecting forwardly therefrom comprise vlinks `6"w gs I are fixed. Journaled on the bearings fforrotation between the 2 and 3 are tubulary rollers 5. f The reduced end portions`26 of the bearings I provide shoulders 21 which,y the links 2x and 3 abut.
`ifhe sections B connect the sections A and hich extend beneath the end cent links 3. -Fixed in the links 6 and rising therefrom l :which are journaled in the bearings 4.
Mounted `on and, connectin portions of the pins 'I are bl rvtially the shape shown to ad of `the drawing. `The blade metal, and have formed ther 9 which accommodate the pins l. 'I'he blades 8 further includesubstantially v-shaped, forwardly projecting front portions I0 provided with vcutting edges Il. As best Seenin Figure 2` of the drawing, the blades\`\reston the upper ends of cheibeanngs .a maken the @inks 2. Cotter pins I2 are provided intlhe upper end portions of the pins 1 for retainingy the blades-8.
The endless sickle thuslfar described is'op"erable on acutter bar I3. iThe cutter bar \I3 is to be provided, on its exi portions, with suitthe aforementioned sprocke may beconnecte `front and back portions of the bar I3 are led of `angular cross secti lie bar I4 and proable horizontally' niounte sprockets around manner to a ger plates l and I5, respecneath the forward portion oi t are guards I6.
g the v'upper end ades 8 of substanvantagein Figure 1 s are of suitable einspaced openings which' the endless.' chain I trained.` One sburce of i power. Mounted on the on. Mounted be- Mounted beneath the rear return housing I'I of angular in conjunction with, the ve ledger plate. I5, deiines a flight of the chain I.
the ledger plate I4 and the on the bar Il.
In operation, the sections A and B of the chain guards I6 in position 25 secure the clips 24,`
1 turning in the tubular bearings 4. Thus. there is nol relative movement between the pins 'I and the bladesy B and consequently no wear occurs at their points of contact. As the chain I travels around the aforementioned sprockets on the end Y portions of the cutter bar, the rollers l turn on the bearings 4. The shoulders 21 positively prevent binding of the tubular rollers B between tne-` links 2 and 3, thus permitting said rollers to turn freely on the bearings l. 'I'he construction 'and arrangement is such that the sickle will function with equal emclency when drivenin either di `rection. By removing the cotter pins I1 frommthe pins 1 of the chain l, the blades I may beexpeditiously removed for travel on the upper portion of the ledger plate I5 and the portion Il of the housing I1.
It is believed that the many advantages of al roller chain sickle constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of Athe de-V y 1- plates of said alternate units.
vice is as illustrated and described, it is to be unf derstood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope ofc-the invention as claimed.
