CASKET SETTING Filed Aug. 29, 1941 Patented Nov. 10, 1942 CASKET SETTING Walter L. Ripley, Woodstock, Va., assignor to Draperies, Incorporated, a corporation of Virginia Application August 29, 1941, Serial No. 408,893
Claims.
can be collapsed and confined for transportation,
or storage; the said carrier comprising a housing with enclosing back, sides and front, the enclosing sides and front being adjustable to cocupy positions rearwardly of the rear wall carrier when the ornamental device or fan-like background is extended, it being understood that the ornamental background may be folded to occupy the interior of the carrier when it is not in use.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a carrier of the character indicated having novel guiding means for a member which carries the casket setting or background thereof.
It is furthermore an object of this invention to provide a casket setting and a carrier therefor to permit the expeditious installation and dismantling of the casket setting.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this application, wherein like char-z acters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of the interior of the carrier showing ribs pivotally mounted and a rib carrier retracted;
Figure 2 illustrates a plan view thereof, showing ribs extended in dotted lines;
Figure 3 illustrates a view in elevation of the rib carrier and the ribs extended and in dotted lines a covering or web carried by the ribs;
Figure 4 illustrates an enlarged detail view of the rib carrier and ribs pivoted thereon;
Figure 5 illustrates a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4;
Figure 6 illustrates a view in elevation of a fragment of the rear of the carrier;
Figure 7 illustrates a sectional view on the line 'l'! of Fig. 1;
Figure 8 illustrates a view in elevation, showing the details of a rib and supplemental ribs; and
Figure 9 illustrates a view in elevation of a rib with a mounting thereon for supplemental ribs.
In this drawing, the casket setting proper is confined in a casing comprising a back plate II, on which the mechanism is mounted or with which it is associated. The casing also includes angularly disposed members, a portion I2 of each member forming the side of the casing and a portion l3 of each member forming one-half of the front of the casing when these members are moved to the positions of the dotted lines in Fig, 2. The member I2 of each closure section is appropriately hinged, as at I4, to the back plate H so that the ornamental features of the casket setting are housed in the casing.
The plate I l is provided with a slot IS in which a bolt [6 is slidable. Strips l1 and I8, preferably of wood, are attached to the rear surface of the plate II and they are spaced apart and provided with slots, such as IS, in their facing edges. A plate 20 has its edge slidable in the slots or grooves I9 and the plate is guided by battens 2| secured to the plate, as shown in Fig. 5, and the sides of the battens engage the edges of the strips l1 and I8 so that a rigid structure is afforded. A face plate 22 is secured to the plate II and it is slotted to form a clearance for the bolt [6 which slides up and down with relation to the casing for the purpose of housing the elements comprising an ornamental background for the casket.
The members comprising the ornamental background include an outer segmental plate 23 and an inner plate 24, through which the bolt l6 extends. Ribs 25 are mounted on pivots 2B concentric with the edge of the segmental plate 23 and these ribs are intended to be separated in fan-like fashion and be supplied with an ornamental web or covering 21 to produce an ornamental effect when it is stationed back of a casket or catafalque. The central rib 25 has auxiliary ribs 25 oscillatable on pivots such as 25 carried by lugs 25 which are preferably integral with the central rib. The outer ribs of the series each has a sleeve 25 slidable thereon, held at different positions of adjustment on the said rib by a binding screw 25, and a jointed rib 25 is pivoted to the outer side of the sleeve and the said jointed rib extends outwardly with respect to the axis of the rib on which the sleeve is slidable so that by the use of the auxiliary ribs on in which, however, the web on the ribs is omitted in the interests of clarity of illustration.
It is obvious from the foregoing description that the casing may be closed or, when it-isopened as shown in Fig. 2, it will be supported in vertical position and when the plate 23 and the ribs pivoted thereon are at the top of the slot IS, the ribs can be separated and caused to assume the positions shown in Fig. 3 sothatthe ornamental background Will appear above a casket stationed in front of the background.
I claim:
1. In a casket setting, a casing having a back plate, a rib carrier movable vertically thereof, means for holding the rib carrier in different positions of adjustment, ribs carried by the rib carrier, means for mounting the ribs side by side transversely of the saidcarrier whereby the said ribs'may be oscillated transversely of the casing,
the said casing having -movable side and front sections, means for hinging the side and front sections whereby they are adjustable rearwardly of the back plate and serve to support the structure when the ribs are swung to open positions, and a web attached to the ribs to form a background.
' 2. In a casket setting, a casinghaving a back plate, a rib carrier movable vertically thereof, means for holding the rib carrier in different positions of adjustment, ribs carried by the rib carrier, means for mounting the ribs side by side transversely of-the saidcarrier whereby the said ribs may be oscillated transversely of the casing, supplemental ribs pivoted to the central rib, other supplemental ribs hinged to each of the outer side ribs, the said casing having movable side and front sections, means for hinging the side and front sections whereby they are adjustable rearwardly of the back plate and serve to support the structure when the ribs are swung to open positions, and a web attached to the ribs to form a background.
3. In a casket setting, a casing having a back plate, a rib carrier movable vertically thereof, means for holding the rib carrier in diiferent positions of adjustment, ribs carried by the rib to open positions, and a web attached to the carrier, means for mounting the ribs side by side transversely of the said carrier whereby the said ribs may be oscillated transversely of the casing, supplemental ribs pivoted to the central rib, a member slidable on each of the outer ribs, means for holding the member at different positions of adjustment thereon, supplemental ribs pivoted to each member, the said casing having movable side and front sections, means for hinging the side and front sections whereby they are adjustable rearwardly of the back plate and serve to support the structure when the ribs are swung ribs to form a background.
fIna casket setting, a casing having a back plate, a rib carrier movable vertically thereof, means for holding the rib carrier in diiiierent positions of adjustment, ribs carried by the rib carrier, means for mounting the ribs side by side transversely of the said carrier whereby the said ribs may be oscillated transversely of the casing, supplemental ribs pivoted to the central rib, a member slidable on each of the outer ribs, means for holding the member at different positions of adjustment thereon, supplemental ribs pivoted to each member, the outer of each supplemental rib being sectional and means by which the sections are pivotally connected, the said casing having movable side and front sections, means for hinging the side and front sections whereby they are adjustable rearwardly of the back plate and serve to support the structure when the ribs are swung to open positions, and a web attached to the ribs to form a background.
5. In a casket setting, a casing having a slotted back plate, guides on the rear of the back plate having slots, a member having it edges engaged and guided by the guides, battens on the member each engaging an edge of a guide, a bolt extending through the slot of the back plate and secured to the said member, a rib carrier comprising spaced segmental plates mounted on the bolt and slidable therewith, ribs having their inner ends pivotally mounted between the said segmental plates nestable in parallel relation to each other in the casing when the segmental plates are lowered in the casing, said ribs being radially movable with relation to the segmental plates to form a fan-like background, an ornamental film on the said ribs, and hinged sides and integral front sections operative to swing rearwardly of the back plate and with the back plate forming a support for the casket setting when in operative position.
