TOILET BOWL Filed May 27, 1941 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Iventor ,mdo
Patented Oct. 20, 1942 UNITED STATES PTENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to toilet bowls, or hoppers, and an object of the present invention is to provide a toilet bowl or hopper so equipped as to facilitate the withdrawing of objectionable odors.
In accordance with the present invention, the bowl is so constructed that a draft or suction of air at opposite sides of the bowl will draw the odors therefrom to be conducted to a remote point.
The invention together with its objects and ad- Vantages will be `best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View through a toilet bowl embodying the features of the present invention, and taken substantially on the line l-l of Figura 2.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the bowl.
Figure 3 is a rear elevational view of the bowl.
Figura 4 is a fragmentary detail sectional View taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail horizontal sectional view taken through the rim of the bowl at the rear or back thereof.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that 5 indicates the toilet bowl or hopper; the same to be equipped with the usual h'nge seat 6 and lid or cover 1.
In accordance with the present invention, the
toilet bowl or hopper 5 is constructed with a departure from the normal by having the rim 'I thereof gradually increasing in width, or transversely as at 8-8 from a point slightly rearwardly of the transverse center of the bowl and at opposite sides of the bowl, as the rim approaches the rear or back end 9 of the bowl, as clearly shown in Figure 2.
In connection with the above, it is to be noted that the rim 1, as is conventional, is provided with the usual fiushing conduit 10, for which outlet perforations Il are provided in the bottom edge of the rim interiorly of the bowl as shown.
Further, in accordance with the present invention, the enlarged portions 8-8 of the rim have formed therein chambers z that at one side thereof open as at !3 through the bottom of the rim into the bowl proper, and at an opposite side thereof form continuations of ducts of passages [4 provided in the body of the bowl at the rear thereof.
As the ducts or passages |4 approach the bottom or base of the bowl, they converge to terminate in a single outlet !5 as clearly shown in Figure 3,
The outlet !5 opens through the bottom or base of the bowl, and at said outlet l5 the bottom or base of the bowl is provided for connection with a take-off conduit, (not shown), and which, in actual practice, will lead from the bowl to some point remote therefrom and preferably to some convenient chimney or stack.
It is also intended, in actual practice, that the referred to conduit first pass downwardly from its connection with the bowl 5 through the floor of the lavatory, and then be extended upwardly through the building to, as above stated, a convenient chimney or special stack to carry off the odors to the atmosphere.
It will be apparent that in actual practice the odors tending to rise from the bowl will pass into the chambers IZ through the inlet !3, and by the suction provided at the end of the aforementioned vent conduit, be drawn through the chambers [2 and the conduits !4 to the o utlet l5 to pass entirely from the bowl and the room to the atmosphere through the aforementioned vent conduit to be connected with the bowl.
It is believed that the many advantages of a toilet bowl or hopper embodying the features of the present invention will be had without further detailed description.
It will also be understood that while I have herein illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, I am fully aware that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
As a new article of manufacture, a toilet bowl of the type embodying an internally projecting rim having an annular water-flushing conduit formed therein, said bowl being constructed with a departure from the normal by having the rim at opposite sides of the bowl and as it approaches the rear of the bowl gradually increasing in width, to provide an inwardly projecting shelf at the rear of the bowl and formed with chambers opening through the bottom of the shelf into the bowl, said chambers extending upwardly from the bottom of the shelf above and behind the water flushing conduit, and take-off conduits for the chambers formed in the wall of the bowl and extending from said chambers in the general direction of the rear of the bowl to terminate adjacent the base of the bowl into a single outlet adapted for connection with a vent pipe for drawing ofif odors from the bowl.
