Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, the platen of a typewriter is generally designated by the numeral 8, the same being mounted on a shaft 9 to each end of which is attached a wheel or knob Ill. The knob ill usually includes a collar II which is secured to the shaft I by means of screws or the like II.

In accordance with the present invention, a cover It, preferably formed of rubber or similar material, is placed over the knob ill, said cover being preferably cylindrical-shaped to conform to the shape of the knob and of hollow construction as best shown in Figure 3 of the drawing. integrally formed radially inwardly extending flanges M and ii are provided on each end of the cover and serve to retain the same in position on the knob. It will be noted from Figure 1 of the drawing that two lines of numerals are employed with the innermost line indicating the first revolution of the platen roller and the outermost line representing the second revolution of the roller.

When initially placing the paper in the typewriter the indicating device is set -so that zero is at the starting line with each number representing one inch and it will be readily evident and therefore the indicia on the cover are to the user of the machine from the\length of paper used whether the platen is on the first,

second or third turn. It is generally understood that six lines can be written to the inch graduated according to inches. Thus when the numeral 1" on the knob has moved into register with the pointer or other indicating means the typist knows that one inch of paper has been moved through the machine. This feature of the device permits the typist .to set her typing in a uniform way from the moment the paper is inserted in the machine and to allow uniform spacing at boththe top and bottom of the sheet. If, for example, the sheet of paper is 10 inches long and the operator of the machine is interested in determining the space left at the bottom of the sheet only and if av one-inch space is desired at the bottom of the sheet, the operator will remove the sheet when the numeral 9 ap-'-' pears at the chosen starting point. Thus the operator does not have to constantly look at the paper.
