Application December 12, 1940, Serial No. 369,861
6 Claims.
My invention pertains to material dispersing apparatus and more particularly to abrasive distributing devices.
It is an object of my invention to provide an improved centrifugal material distributing apparatus.
It is also an object of my invention to provide improved rotary material distributing devices of simple, durable construction comprising means controlled for restricting the flow of material from the apparatus during predetermined portions of the circle of rotation of the apparatus.
It is a further object of my invention to provide rotary material distributing apparatus comprising, a rotatable material distributing housing which .is hollow and has material distributing apertures opening outwardly for distributing material from the central portion of the housing as it rotates, and also having an aperture closing member adjacent each aperture for closing and opening the apertures as the housing rotates, and control means for controlling the opening and closing of each aperture during predetermined portions of the circle of rotation.
Further object and advantages are within the scope of my invention, such as relate to the arrangement, operation and function of the related elements of the structure, to various details of construction and to combinations of parts, elements per se, and to economies of manufacture and numerous other features as will be apparent from a consideration of the specification in conjunction with the drawings disclosing a specific embodiment of my invention, similar reference characters being applied to corresponding elements throughout, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view taken axially along the axis of rotation and showing rotary distributing apparatus arranged in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on line 22 thereof; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view, being a cross section through the central portion of one of the slot closing members 45.
Referring more particularly to the figures of the drawings, I have illustratively disclosed a preferred embodiment of my improved material dispersing apparatus comprising a drive shaft II which is journalled for rotation on a horizontal 5 axis in suitable bearing I3, rising from a support I4, located on the floor I5 and it may be driven by an electric motor or other motive means in any suitable manner. The other end of the drive shaft. II
extends from the bearing and has mounted thereon for support and rotation a hol low material distributing housing I6 comprising an end wall I6 and a cylindrical portion I1, the end wall being therein secured in any suitable manner as by tack welding. The housing I6 has spaced abrasive guides I8 of a substantially triangular cross section, see Fig. 2, secured therein, as by means of screws I8, as shown, or any other suitable means. The cylindrical portion I! of said housing I6 has material distributing apertures I9 opening outwardly for delivering material by centrifugal force from the inside as the housing rotates. The material dispersing apertures I9 may take the form of axially elongated slots spaced apart circumferentially in the side walls thereof, said slots being located at the points between the guides I8. The apex of each guide I8 is turned inwardly and is provided with retaining bars 2| extending across from each apexto each adjacent apex where these may be secured, as by welding, to prevent the slot closing members from falling inwardly when the device is stationary. At one end the housing I6 is open for receiving material from any source of supply. The closed end or wall I6 of the housing is secured to the end of the shaft II, as by a screw 25 extending into a threaded aperture therein. If desired, the end Wall I6 of the housing may be securely interlocked to rotate with the shaft II as by suitable interlocking parts (not shown) provided on these two elements for interconnection therebetween, but this is not necessary where the apparatus is utilized for light work.
On the end of the shaft II adjacent the material distributing housing a collar2'l is secured, as by a set screw or key 28, and carries an attaching flange 29 projecting laterally to a substantially greater diameter than the housing.
One form of a device in which my dispersing apparatus may be used will now be described. A circular side wall plate 3| may be provided which fits snugly over the peripheral surface of the walls, as by welding, are aplurality of spaced partitions 31 which extend radially, one from between each slot I9 in the material dispersing housing and in this manner a radial dispersing passage 39 is formed, open from each slot. Material or abrasive to be dispersed is fed into the open end of the housing as by a conduit 4| leadripheral portion H of the housing I6 as it rotates,
a slot closing member 45 is provided adjacent each slot. As shown, each slot closing member 45 is an axially elongated bar of generally triangular cross-section of a suitable width for closing the adjacent aperture: or slot. i In opera-; 10
tion centrifugal force throws the bars 45 outwardly and the retainer bars 2| hold these where the housing is not rotating.
Control means is provided for controllin-gl'the r I claim:
