(Cl. 20S- 44) A further object of the invention is the provision of a new and improved carton in box form made from a single piece of cardboard and having reinforced corner members.
A stm further object of the invention is the provision of a new and improved carton in box form fabricated from a single piece of material and having windows in its walls.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a new and improved one-piece carton in box form and of paperboard, or board made of cellulose or the like, that is easily fabricated, inexpensive to manufacture, and that is reinforced and comparatively sturdy in construction.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will appear .from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the carton with the top closed, and with parts broken away;
Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing the top in open position;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. l, with parts removed; and l Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the carton is made or fabricated.
In the construction of cartons, boxes or containers, and the like, from a single piece of material, it is common practice to fashion or cut the piece in such manner that when folded to proper form and the completed carton put to its intended use, the parts subjected to the greatest strain or the parts that retain the shape or form of the carton when constructed are not properly reinforced. The present invention seeks to remedy this diiculty by providing integral reinforcing means for the vertical corners and other parts of the carton whereby the latter will retain its original shape or form.
Referring now to the drawings, the reference character 5, Fig. 5, designates the blank from which the carton is made. This blank comprises the body portion or bottom wall 6 which, in the form shown, is rectangular. The body portion 6 is provided with side extensions 1 and 3 extending laterally in opposite directions. The extension 1 is adapted to be folded along the line 9-9 to form what, for convenience of description, will be termed the side Wall III and the top section I I of the carton or container. The extension 8 is likewise adapted to be folded along the line I2-I2 to form what is destined to be the side wall I3 and the top section IIa. The body portion 6 is also provided with end extensions I4 and- I5 which extend in opposite directions to form what will be termed the ends or end walls of the carton when the same is completed.
' The end extensions I4 and I5 are severed from the extensions 1 and 8 by slits I6, I1, I8 and I9. These slits are parallel with the side extensions 1 and 8 and are along the side edges of said extensions. They are of a' depth suiiicient to form the naps 2I and 22 of the end extension I4 and the flaps 23 and 24 of the -end extension ,of the slits 25 and 26 and I8 and I9, respectively,
through for forming flaps 20 and 3 0 which form ledges across the top of the carton when the same is completed, Fig. 2. The tabs 21 and 28 of the end sectionlf I4 are folded at right angles to the plane of the ap 20 so that they will engage the flaps 2| and 22 and extend downwardly alongside the same when the carton is completed, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The tabs 32 and 33 are likewise adapted to be folded to extend downward alongside the aps 23 and 24 to which they are adapted to be attached in the completed carton.
The side extension 1 is provided with slits 34 and 35 which are in alinement and are parallel with the end extensions I4 and I'5 and are of such depth as to form tabs 36 and 31. Ihe side extension 8 is likewise provided with the slits 38 and 38 for forming the tabs 4I and 42 on what may be termed the sectional fla-p 40.
The'v end and side extensions are adapted to be folded at right angles to the body portion 8 to frm the end and side walls of the carton. If desired, the blank may be scored along the lines 43, 44, 45 and 46 so that the 'material may be more easily folded along these lines. It will be noted that the line 43 extends through the bottoms of the slits 25, I 6, I9 and 3I and that the line 45 extends through the bottom of the slits 26, II, I8 and 29. The lines 44 and 45 are in alinement with the slits I6, II and I8, I9, `respectively, so that the parts may be properly folded to form the end and side walls and also to form the flaps on the end walls, as will presently appear.
The side extension 8 may also be scored in alinement with the slits 38 and 39 so that the flaps 40 may be more easily folded. All of the scorings may be dispensed with, if desired. One of the side extensions, as the flap on the extension 8, may be slit to form a tab 4' I which may be used in opening the container.
The -blank may be folded in various Ways to form the carton. One form will be given by way of example. I
The tabs 32 and 33 are folded at right angles to the plane of the end extension I5 along the lines 43 and 45 and then the flap 30 is folded at right angles to the blank along the line of the slits 29 and 3|. The flaps 23 and 24 are then folded at right angles to the blank along the lines 45 and 43, respectively, over into engagement with the tabs 32 and 33 and attached thereto by a paste, cement, or the like, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. After both end extensions have thus been treated, they are then folded at right angles to the blank -along the lines 44 and 46.
The folding of the side extensions will now be described.
The side extension 'I is folded along the line 9--9 at a right angle to the bottom wall I I after which the side Wall I0 is folded at a right angle to the body portion 6 along the line 43 thus bringing side wall I0 into engagement with the flaps 2I and 24 to which they are fastened by cement, or the like, for forming reinforced corner members.
The side extension 8 is then folded into position. It is folded at a right angle along the line I2-I2 and the sections of the flap 40 are folded along the dotted line 10 through 180. The side wall I3 is then folded through 90 along the dotted line 45 and is secured to the flaps 22 and 23 in any suitable manner, as by means of cement, glue, or the like.
The carton is now complete, as shown in Fig. 2A, and after the product has been placed in the same, or the carton has been lled, the closure or top lwall is closed by bending the top sections to form a window in both side and top walls, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
While the carton, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, has transparencies in its walls, it is understood that this is by way of example only as it may be made otherwise.
It is thought from the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that the construction of my device will be apparent to those skilled in the art and that changes in size, shape, proportion and details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A carton formed from a single piece of material comprising a bottom wall section, a pair of end walls bent to extend upwardly from said bottom wall, said end walls each having flaps along its side and top edges folded at right angles to said end wall, a tab at opposite ends of the a'p along the top edge of each end wall secured to the remaining flaps of each wall, respectively, a side wall folded at right angles to said bottom wall and secured to the adjacent flaps on the side edges of the end wall, a top wall section integral with each side wall, and means for securing said top wall sections in lowered position on the upper edges of said top and side walls, and means comprising tabs on each of said top wall sections engaging beneath said first named flaps in overlapping relation, one of said top wall sections being return bent at its free end and transversely slitted at its central portion to form an opening tab.
2. A container made from a unitary strip of paperboard comprising bottom, end, side and sectional top walls forming a right parallelopiped having the corners formed by the side and end walls of double thickness, and having the major portion of each wall of a single thickness, said end walls having ledges extending at right angles to the plane of said end walls, one of the II and IIa into Contact with the flaps 20 and 30, which have become ledges, and inserting the tabs 35 and 31 beneath the same for interlocking the parts in position. The top section IIa is likewise bent down onto the flaps or ledges 20 and 30 and the tabs 4I and 42 caused to engage beneath the same to interlock the parts to form a closed carton, as shown in Fig. 3. The tab 41, when the carton is closed, is on the outside for constituting a handhold for opening the closure section to which it is attached.
The end extensions I4 and I5 may be, and preferably are, -provided with window openings 5I and 52 which may be closed'with transparent material, such as Cellophane or the like, secured in position thereon. The side extensions I and 8 have enlarged window openings 53 and 54 which may likewise be closed with a sheet of flexible transparent material such as Cellophane or the like. The openings 53 and y54 are of such a. size that they extend along the side and over the top of the carton sections of said top wall having tabs engaging eneath said ledges, the other section of said top wall having short slits therein to form tabs adjacent' the end of the section for engaging beneath said ledges and the other portion of the latter section having the tabs return bent except at its central portion, said central portion forming a tab by means of which said container may be opened.
3. A container made from a single piece of flexible board comprising bottom, end, side and sectional top walls, said container having window openings in all of said walls except the bottom one, transparent material in said openings, a ledge extending inwardly from the top edges cf opposite upright end walls, the top sections being movably connected to oppositely arranged walls adjacent to said ledges, and tabs on said top sections engageable beneath said ledges for holding said top sections onto said ledges for closing said container, one of the sections of said top wall having its outer edge slit at its intermediate portion to form a tab constituting a handle for opening the container, and the portions of said top wall at opposite sides of said last named tab being return bent.
4. A carton comprising a bottom wall, sides, ends and a top wall, said end, side and top walls having window openings therein, said carton being formed from a single board of cellulose material bent to form so as to provide reinforced vertical corner columns, said end walls having inwardly extending ledges along their upper edges.
said top wall being in two sections overlapping at their free ends, one of said sections having tabs at the sides, at the free end thereof, engaging beneath said ledges and the other section' having a bent under ap along its free end severed at its ends from the corresponding section to form tabs for engagement beneath said ledges in overlapping arrangement to the first-named tabs.
5. A blank for forming a carton comprising a rectangular body portion, integral end extensions extending in opposite directions from the ends of said body portion, the side edge of each end extension having open-ended parallel slits at its base and adjacent its outer end for providing corner reinforcing flaps and for providing tabs and ledges forming aps integral with one another, said blank having side extensions extending in opposite directions from the sides of said body portion, one of said side extensions having spaced slits in its outer edge portion to form an opening tab and having alined openended slits in its side edges for providing return bent reinforcing aps and ledge attaching tabs,
the other side extension having transverse alined open-ended slits adjacent its outer end for forming ledge engaging tabs, said side extensions being of sufcient length to form the sides and overlapping top walls of said container.
6. A carton comprising a bottom Wall, sides, ends and a top wall, said end, side and top walls having window openings therein, said carton being formed from a single board of cellulose material bent to form so as to provide reinforced vertical corner columns, said end walls having inwardly extending ledges along their upper
