Description

Sept. 29, 142. K. LORENZ COOLED INJECTION NOZZLE Filed April 5, 1940 llllllllll llllllllr Patented Sept. 29, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Karl Stuttgart, Germany; vested in Alien Property Custodian the Application April 5, 1940, Serial No. 328,131 In Germany April 28, 1939 3 Claims. (Cl. 299-1016) This invention relates to a cooled iniection nozzle, particularly for internal combustion engines, whose spraying end is surrounded by a cooling jacket so as to form between the jacket and the body oi the noule a hollow space for the reception of a coolant.
The invention has for its object to insure eiiective cooling involving the supply of relatively large amounts of coolant within a restricted space, and this object is attained by having only a narrow blunt portion or a recessed section of the body of the nozzle, interrupted by a coolant teed slot, contact with the inner face of the cooling jacket.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a. longitudinal section of a. nozzle according to the invention on the line 1-1, oi 2:
Fig. 2, a cross section on the line Ill-II, of Fig. 1:
Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the body of the nozzle on the line III-III, of Fig. 2;
,Flg. '4, a cross section or the body of the nozzle on the line IV-IV, of Fig. l; and
- Fig. 5, a side view of the body of the nozzle in the direction of the arrow V in Fig. 1, with the cooling jacket shown in section.
I l is a nozzle holder whose end face 2 connec with the body of a nozzle 3 having a, longitudinal bore provided with a needle t which is pressed upon its seat 6 by a spring 542. Fuel passes through a bore, not visible, in the nozzle holder i into a channel l oi the member 3, thence through an annular space 8, 9 to the seat 5, lifts the needle s when the pressure of an injection pump, not shown, has sufllciently increased to overcome the action or the spring to, and is finally sprayed through holes it.
Near the spray holes it the nozzle member 3 is firmly connected, for instance by solderin with one end of a cooling jacket H. The other end ll of the jacket it has the form of a flange which by a cap nut 98 is forced into sealing engagement with a shoulder it of the nozzle member-.3 pressed by the same nut it against the end face 2 of the holder l, dowel pins 25 securing the member 3 in position relative to the holder l, as
indicated in Fig. 2..
The section of the nozzle member 3 covered by the cooling jacket I H is recessed, and its cross section has approximately the oval form shown in Fig. 4, so that a hollow space l for the reception of a coolant is provided. The blunt side it of the nozzle member 8 contacts with the inner wall of the jacket II and contains a groove H which through a channel it is connected with a coolant supplying bore IQ of the shoulder l4 and whose inclined end portion 20 extends into the hollc'iw space l5. The coolant is discharged through achannel 22 which commences above the hollow space l5 and leads through a bore, not visible, in the holder 1 to a coolant return piping, not
shown. The channel 22 is so arranged that the coolant fed to the hollow space It through the groove ll, 20 must flow around the nozzle member 3 before it leaves the hollow space it.
What is claimed is: v
l. A cooled injection nozzle for internal combustion engines, comprising a. body member having a lower. recessed portion, a cooling jacket surrounding said lower recessed portion of the body member to form a hollow space for the reception of a coolant, a portion of said body member be ing substantially oval in cross-section with three arcuate surfaces forming sides, one of said sides comprising a narrow blunt portion, said body member contacting and forming a seal with the irmer face of said jacket over the entire height.

A cooled injection nozzle for internal combustion engines, comprising a. nozzle body and a circular tubular cooling jacket surrounding its fuel outlet end, a portion of said nozzle body hemg substantially oval in cross-section with three arcuate surfaces forming sides, two of said sides being spaced from the circular inner wall of'said' cooling jacket and the third side bearing against and forming a seal with said circular inner wall and with its arcuate surface complementary to said circular inner wall whereby said nozzle body forms a partition extending longitudinally of said cooling jacket, and a passage provided in said nozzle body adjacent the third side thereof and opening into the space between the nozzle body and cooling jacket adjacent the fuel outlet end of the nozzle body for supplying cooling fluid to said space.
3. A cooled injection nozzle for internal combustlon engines, comprising a. body member hav. ing a lower recessed portion and a portion or ene larged diameter above the recessed portion "to form a shoulder on the fuel inlet side of the body member, said enlarged portion having a coolantconducting bore, said recessed portion having. an
oval cross-section with three arcuate suriaces forming sides, one ofsaid sides comprising a narl i I l row blunt portion having a longitudinal groove arranged to communicate with the coolant-conducting bore in the enlarged portion of the body member and having an opening extending through one wall only or the groove at the lower end, a cooling jacket surrounding the lower recessed portion of the body member to form therewith a hollow space for the reception of a coolant,
said jacket fitting tightly against and forming a
