Description

p ,1 42 M. CARTER 2,296,020
LOCK- Filed May 6, 1939 INVENTOR.
Mark C arter Patented Sept. 15, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to looks and more particularly todoor locks of the cylinder type.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive lock of the character described.
Another object of the invention is to provide simplifying improvements in looks combining features of fewer parts, improved operation and reduced cost.
Other objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan section through a door frame and lock embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken alon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; i
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken along the line 5--5 of Fig, 4;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken along the line 6-6 of Fig, 1;
Fig. '1 is a view similar to Fig. 6 showing the lock mechanism in retracted position; and
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the actuating members and its mounting plate.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, I show a door frame member having a recess II for a lock bolt assembly l2. Assembly I2 consists of a pair of stampings 13 forming a longitudinal housing, the stampings having end portions l4 bent at right angles and enclosed by a suitable reinforcing plate l provided with apertures I6 for screw mounting in a door frame. A stamping I1 is suitably secured to members l3 at the opposite end and forms a closure therefor.
Members l3 are each provided with a circular aperture l8 which forms bearings for the ends of a cylinder crank l9 which is provided with a transverse central slot 20 in which is pivotally screwed at 2| one end of a link 22, the opposite end of which is pivoted at 23 to a lock bolt 24. Link 22 is provided with a pair of notches 25 for positioning one end of a compression spring 26, the other end of which is held by the upper portion of members 13. Member 22 is further provided with a suitable stop 21 for abutment with the bottom of the bolt housing when the bolt is in projected position and link 22 has been moved beyond dead center position.
Cylinder crank I9 is provided with a rectangular aperture 28 adapted to receive an operator of rectangular cross section 29, one end of which is provided with a semi-circular flange 30 and a diametrical face 3|. A cylinder lock casing 32 is mounted on door frame I0 by a suitable spacer or cylinder ring 33 and held by securing screws 34. A key 35 is shown for operation of a usual tumbler cylinder 36. Cylinder casing 32 has a face portion 31 to which is secured a plate 38 as by one or more screws 39.
Plate member 38 has a flange portion 40 and an aperture 4| by which operator 29 is maintained in position with flange 30 adjacent the end of cylinder or key plug 36 and face 3| adapted to be turned by the end of key 35 for actuation of the lock bolt.
Escutcheon plate 42 is secured to the inner side of door [0 by screws 34 and provides rotatable mounting for the shank 43 of an inside knob 44. An elongated rectangular recess 45 in shank 43 is adapted to receive the end of operator 29 for rotation of the cylinder crank l9 from the inner side of the door. 1
The operation of the invention should be clear from the foregoing description. Bolt 24 is reciprocated by link 22 between the positions shown in Figs. 6 and 7 and rotated by the operator 29. As shown in Fig. 6, the action of spring 26 is such as to maintain link 22 beyond the dead center of pivot 23 and the center of rotation of cylinder crank l9 so that bolt 24 is maintained in a deadlocked condition.
It will be clear from this description that the lock construction hereinabove described has improved characteristics of simplicity as well as economy of manufacture and is operable with a minimum of eifort, Furthermore, it will be clear that the lock bolt assembly I2 is reversible and bolt 24 may if desired have a beveled face for self locking action.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
In combination an elongated housing, a bolt reciprocable in an end portion of said housing, a link secured to said bolt, a crank pivotally mounted in said housing adapted to reciprocate said link, and a coiled spring disposed between a side wall of said housing and said link and cooperable with said crank to provide a deadlock for said bolt, said link having a pair of guide notches for said spring.
MARK CARTER.
