to construct, strong and durable, and provided with a cavity of the desired size and shape into which-a molten mass of metal is poured to provide a plurality of slots and openings extending transversely of the slots.
Another object is the provision of cutting blades constructed in such manner to snuggly fit slots molded in the holder and with Openings at the base of the blades for receiving locking members therethrough to replaceably retain the blades to the holder.
I-Ieretofore, various arrangements of holders and cutting blades have been proposed. In many of such arrangements, the cutting blades are permanently secured as a unit to the holder, and should it be found necessary to replace a blade, the entire holder is removed, and a new one installed. In most instances, the holder and cutting blades are of such construction and arrangement, that it is necessary to ship the same to the manufacturer for repairs. This method is not only costly, but much delay is caused and the device on which the holder is employed, is rendered useless until such repair is made.
As a further aspect of the invention, I provide cutting blades constructed in a manner to be readily and easily removed or inserted in the holder, and whereby each cutting blade may be individually ripped to be removed or inserted.
For a more complete understanding of the invention, reference should now be had to the drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder illustrating the cavity therein preparatory to filling the same with a molten mass of metal.
- Figure 2 is a perspective view of a plate having strips thereon and attachable to the holder for providing slots and openings in the molten mass of metal poured into the cavity.
Figure 3 is a sectional view illustrating the plate and holder clamped together preparatory to pouring the molten mass of metal into the cavity.

Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, my invention is illustrated as applied to a holder having a handle, and of a type employed in meat tendering machines, the cutting blades of which machines are frequently damaged by striking a bone or other substances which may accidentally be placed under the holder.
Further, holders of this character are frequentlywashed to becleaned, and when desired, thecutting blades may be readily removed to be sharpened and are easily replaced. The construction being such that by withdrawing a pair of insertable members renders the cutting blades free to be removed, and each end of the cutting blades are provided with notches therein whereby they may be gripped and. removed from the holder.
The holder designated as H] may be of any suitable material and formed, or as shown, may be cast to the required shape, providing a cavity H having a relatively flat surface IZ'and undercut side edges I3, The top edge lllof the cavity is machined to provide a smooth flat surface, and is relieved at [5 to form a receiving opening to pour a molten mass of metal into the cavity. The holder I0 is also provided in opposite side edges of the cavity II thereof with aligned openings |6I6 and I'l--ll.
In order to provide the cavity l l with a smooth top surface flush with the side edges of the holder II], a plate I8 is introduced and is provided with a plurality of strips H) which are of the form and size of the slots required in the holder It] for receiving the replaceable cutting blades, which Will be later described. These strips I9 extend outwardly on one face of the plate [8 a lesser distance than the depth of the cavity ll, so that when the plate [8 is placed in face to face position with the holder I0, the strips l9 will extend into the cavity ll without touching the surface l2 or the side edges l3 of the cavity.
After the holder H1 and plate I8 have been properly positioned, they are clamped together by means of a C-clamp 20 or other suitable fastening means and placed in a position of approximately 45 with the relieved portion l5 of the holder located at the top, and when in this position, the strips [9 are disposed vertically in the cavity H.
In order to properly position the holder l and plate 18 with respect to the strips l9, a ledge 2| is provided on the plate l8 against which the holder I!) is brought to rest prior to clamping or securing the same in position, At this time, a molten mass of metal A is introduced and poured through the relieved portion l5 of the holder and plate l8 into the cavity II and around the strips I9 to fill the cavity and to fully surround the strips with the adjacent face 18a. of the plate l8 serving as a smooth surface providing a finish to the metal A when it has cooled.
After the metal A is sufiiciently cooled, the assembly may be separated by removing theholder ID from the plate I8, which removes the strips Hi from the metal A leaving a plurality of elongated slots 22.
To accommodate for various kinds of cutting blades 23, it is sometimes desired to stagger the slots 22 with respect to their longitudinal positions, this being provided for in the positioning of the strips IS on the plate I8 prior to the clamping of the same to the holder l0.
In order to provide means for securing the cutting blades 23 into the molded slots 22', the strips H! are each provided with spaced apart openings 2'4'-25, which are aligned when the strips are secured to the plate l8, and theseopenings 25-25 are also aligned with the openings l'6i6 and l1-l"l, respectively, of the holder. Prior to pouring the metal A into the cavity II, a rod 26 is inserted through openings I6-l6 of the holder and openings 24 of the strips 1'9 and'a rod 21 is inserted throughopenings l'l-l| of the holder and openings 25 of the strips, so that the metal A poured into the cavity II will surround the rods 26 and 21 and provide transverse openings 28' and 29, respectively, in the metal A, and which openings are aligned with openings Iii-46 and l'l-.-l'l of the holder H1.
The metal A poured into the cavity ll of the holder It will form bases 30 (Fig. 3) of the proper depth and of uniform alignment with respect to'the series of cutting blades 23to be inserted within the slots 22 regardl'essof the irregularity of the surface [2 of the cavity. The metal A also forms spacer means between the edges [3 of the cavity H to properly position the cutting blades 2 3 and to prevent end thrust movement of the cutting blades while in the holder.
When the cutting blades 23' are positioned in the slots 2'1, retaining members 3l3"2 are then inserted through the openings [E -28 and l"|- 29 of the holder l0 and through openings 21th- 23'a in the cutting blades to retain them in rigid position against their bases 36 and snugly held against sidewise movement by reason of the close fitting of the cutting blades in the slots 22.
In the manufacture of cutting blades of the type employed for meat tendering machines, it is desirous to have a discontinuous cutting edge and with the blades arranged" in staggered'rel'ation so as'to thoroughly and completely sever the tendons and ligaments in the meat without completely severing the meat into smaller pieces.-
When it is desired to remove any or all of the cutting blades 23 from the holder H], the retaining members 3l3'2 are withdrawn, which renders the cutting blades free to be removed, and
due to their snug fit in the slots 2-2, provision is made foreasily removing the cutting blades.
The cutting blade is provided at each end thereof adjacent the surface ofthe metal A with a notched-out portion 33 into which the end of' a screw driver or other instrument may be inserted to force the cutting blade 23 out of the slot 22 for removal.
As the cutting blades are usually employed in connection with a cutting board, the blades may be positioned into the slots 22 a sufficient distance to retain them in position, and by then pressing the holder I0 against the cutting board (not shown), the cutting blades will be forced into their respective slots 22 to the limit of their movements, and at which time, the retaining members 3| and 32 may be inserted to securely retain the cutting blades on the holder.
I claim:
' 1.- The method of making a holder adapted to receive a plurality of individually removable knives by molding a base with slots therein in a frame which comprises providing said frame with a bottom and inwardly sloping side members to form a recess undercut along said side members, positioning said frame upon a cooperating mold member having a plurality of projecting strips of the shape of said knives, centering said frame upon said mold member to' predetermine the position of said strips within said recess in said frame, holding said frame and said mold together, filling said recess with a molten material through an opening in one of said sides of said frame, separating said frame and said mold member when said molten ma terial solidifies whereby said solidified material forms said base withsaicl slots therein; and thereafter utilizing said frame as said holder with said base locked therein along said undercut sides. r w

The method of making a holder adapted to receive a plurality of individually removable knives by molding a base with slots therein in a frame which comprises providing said frame with a bottom and inwardly sloping side members to form a recess undercut along said side members, positioning said frame upon a cooperating mold member having a plurality of projecting strips of the shape of said knives; centering saidframe upon said mold member to predetermine the position of said strips within said reces'sin said frame, holding said frame and said mold together, filling said recess with a moltenma: terial, separating said frame and said moldmember when said molten material solidifies whereby said solidified material forms said base with said slots therein, and thereafter utilizing said frame as said holder with said" base" locked therein along said undercut sides.
3. The method of making a holder adapted to receive a plurality of individually removable knives by molding a base with slots therein ina frame which comprises providing said frame with a bottom and side members to'form arecess, positioning said frame upon a cooperating mold member having a plurality of projecting strips of the shape of said knives, centering-said frame upon'said mold member to predetermirie the position of said strips within-said recessinsaid frame, holding said' frame and said mold member together, filling said recess with a molten material, separating said frame and-said mold member when said molten materialsolidi-- fies whereby said solidified material forms said base with said slots therein, and thereafter utilizing said frame as a holder withsaid base locked therein. h d
