The frictional pressure rollersfi and I are adjustable into and out of cooperative relation with the platen roll I to operatively engage and release the record material 8 by means of an oscillatory throw-out lever l9. throw-out and control mechanism for the pressure rollers illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, 6 and 7 is that of a well known and popular type of writing machine, here shown for illustrative purposes only. It is to be understood that the present like projection l6 upon a swinging mounting arm H which in turn carries the pressure roller 6. The second pressure roller 1 is carried by a cooperating swinging arm IB, pivoted at l9, and provided with a projecting stud or pin 29 with which one end of the swinging arm H has operative engagement. The swinging arms I1 and I8 are'normally subjected to spring influence by which they are oscillated to press the rollers 6 and 1 against the periphery of the platenroll or against the record material 8 interposed therebetween. Upon depression of the throw-out lever |9 from the position shown in Fig. 6 to that illustrated in Fig. 7, the bell crank lever is oscillated and by the interengagement of the arm l with the beak-like projection IS the swinging 45 mounting arm I1 is oscillated away from the platen roll I, carrying with it the pressure roller 6 and, at the same time, through its interengagement with the pin or stud 29 efiecting a like outward swinging movement of 'the second mounting arm 8 to withdraw the second pressure roller 1. The retracted or inoperative relation of the frictional pressure rollers 6 and 1 is illustrated in Fig. 7.
Referring particularly to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, there is mounted above the platen roll I a frame including a vertical guide plate 2| disposed in a.
vertical plane substantially tangential with the platen roll I and having rearwardly extending ends 22 provided with dependent bifurcated legs 23 which straddle the trunnionshaft 2 of the platen roll to relatively locate the frame structure; The lower margin 24 of the vertical plate 2| is deflected upwardly and rearwardly in spaced relation above the platen roll I to afford an alternative guide for the record material 8. Secured to the terminal portions 22 are horizontal brackets or bars 25 to be secured byv screws 26 to the reciprocatory platen carriage of a writing machine. Revolubly mounted in notches 26a in the top margins of the terminal portions 22 of the frame is a shaft 21 carrying pin wheel units 29 which are longitudinally adjustable upon the shaft 21 to accommodate record material of dif- The particular ferent widths. The vertical guide plate 2| is provided at spaced intervals with slots 29 through which the radial pins 39 of the pin-wheel units project into engagement within the marginally 5 punched holes 3| in the record material 8. .The pin wheel units 28 are splined upon the shaft 21 and are held thereon in adjusted relation with their feeding pins projecting through the selected slots 29 by set screws 32. At the front of the 0 guide plate 2| there is disposed a transverse rod 33 supported in brackets or ears 34 upon which are adjustable mounted slotted paper guides 35,
between which guides andthe plate 2| the mar ginally punched paper or record material I is 15 directed. -These slotted guides35 are adjusted into registry with the slots 29 of the guide plate 2| and serve to retain the punched record material upon the feeding pins 39.
The shaft 21 and pin wheel units 28 are ro- 2o tated in unison with the platen roll' I by a train of gear pinions comprising the gears 36 and 31 mounted upon the trunnion shaft 2 and pin wheel shaft 21 respectively and interconnected by an intermediate idler pinion 38. The pin wheel shaft 21 is removably retained within its bearing slots in the terminal portions 22 of the supporting frame by slide bars 39 secured in position by a clamp screw 49.
In the use of this auxiliary device, the record to material 9 is fed over the usual paper guide 4| at the rear of the platen roll I and thence circumferentially beneath the platen roll intermediate the frictional pressure rollers 6 and 1 and past the writing position 5. In the event that the 3.3 record material is to be positively fed past the writing position, the pressure rollers 15 and 1 are retracted to inoperative relation with the platen 'roll by movement of the throw-out lever l9 and the marginally punched record material is ex- 40 tended upwardly beyond the writing position over the guide plate 2| and beneath the paper guides 35 where it is engaged by the feeding pins 39 of the pin wheel units 28. The pin wheel units 29, being rotated in unison with the platen roll I by means of the gear train 36, 31, 38, the record material is positively advanced by the Progressive engagement of the pins 39 in the marginal holes 3 I. In the event that unpunched record material is to be fed or if conditions are such that positive 0 feeding is not necessary, the material may be frictionally fed about the platen roll I by manipulating the throw-out lever 9 to return the frictional pressure rollers 6 and 1 into cooperative relation with the record material and platen roll; In such case the inscribed portions of the record material beyond the writing position may be deflected rearwardly over the top of the platen roll I and beneath the guide portion 24 of the plate 2|. In such path of travel it is not engaged by the positively feeding pin wheel units which operate idly. In lieu of deflecting the inscribed portions of the record material out of the path of operative engagement of the pin wheel units, the pin wheel feeding devices may be bodily removed by releasing the set screw 49 and withdrawing the retaining slide 39, whereupon the shaft 21 and pin wheel unit 28 may b lifted from the slotted bearings in the top of the portions 22 of the supporting frame.

other means may be'provided' for effecting the same result without departing from the spirit of the invention. For illustrative purposes, there is shown in Fig. 4 an arcuate paper guid plate 44 underlying the frictional pressure rollers 6 and e 1, about which the record material 8 is conducted fromthe paper guide 4| without passing intermediate the frictional pressure rollers and the platen roll.
In Figs. 5, 6 and '1 there is illustrated an alternative construction wherein in. lieu of the pin type feeding device mounted above the platen roll and beyond thewriting position; as heretofore described, there are provided pin wheel units 28a carried upon a transverse shaft 21a, mounted in extensions of the swinging arms l8 which carry the frictional pressure roller 1., As illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, the swinging arms l8 are elon-. gated beyond their pivotal connections I9 for rocking motion in unison with the rocking movement of the arms l1 carrying the pressure rollers 6 which are actuated by the throw-out lever Ill. The pin wheel units 280. being connected with the friction rollers 1 for rocking motion about the pivotal stud l9, alternate with the friction pressure rollers in their relation to the record material. That is to say the rocking motion of the swinging arms l8, incident to the adjustment of the pressure rollers 6 and 1 into cooperative relation with the platen roll to frictionally feed the record material thereabout, effects a simultaneous retraction of the positive pin type feeding devices 28a away from operative relation with the record material, andvice versa, the retraction of the frictional pressure rollers to inoperative position effects movementsof the pin wheel units 28a into feeding engagement with the marginally punched material. The ends of the platen roll I are pro- 'vided with peripheral grooves affording clearance for the feeding pinsof the pin wheel units 28a. If it is desired to write beyond such peripheral grooves, particularly when the positive feeding device is ineifective and the frictional pressure rollers are being relied upon for record material feeding action, a suitable guard or mask 45, supported upon a transverse rod, 46, overlies and closes the peripheral groove at the writing line but allows ,the feeding pins to enter such groove Paper guide fingers 41 are provided in overlying; relation with the record material above the platen roll I and serve to direct the inscribed portions of the record materialrearwardly.
In Fig. 8 there is shown a. further variation of the I embodiment illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, wherein the pin wheel shaft 21 and positive feeding members 28 are carriedby a swinging arm 48 pivoted upon the trunnion shaft 2 of the platen roll I for bodily swinging movement toward and from the path of travel of the record material. In this construction, the end portion 22 of the record material guide plate 2|" isformed with an arcuate slot 49, and theswinging arm 48 is rovided with a clamp stud 50 engaging in the slot 49. and adapted to hold the arm'and, the pinwheel units carried thereby in their forward position wherein the path of the travel of the feeding pins intersects the path of travel of the record material over the plat 2| and beneath the paper guides 35. termediate idler pinion 38 is also carried by the swinging arm 48 whereby the motion transmittin gears 31 and 38 have planetary movement about the gear 31 carried by the'platen roll I. During periods of effective operation of the fricterial about the platen roll independently of the pin wheel units, the latter may be retracted to inoperative position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 8 by a swinging movement of the'carrying arms 48. During alternating periods of positive advancement of the record material, during inoperative periods of the frictional feeding devices, the arm 48 is adjusted to its forward position wherein the pin wheel units have operative engagement with the record, material being advanced over the guide plate 2|. Thus, inthe construction shown in Fig. 8 the positive feeding device is adjustable relative to the path of movement of the record material, whereas in Figs. 2
and 3 the path of the record material is variable relative to the positive feeding device. Likewise, in the construction illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7,
the pin type feeding devices are bodily movable into andout of operative relation with the record material. In the construction shown in the latter figures the adjustment-of the throw-out lever ID to a mid range position will temporarily maintain both the frictional feeding rollers 6 and and the pin type feeding devices 280. 'out-of' engagement with the record materia while the latter is being adjusted about the platen roll into proper relation with the writing position and usual line spacing device's.
From the above description it will be apparent that there is thus provided a device of the character described possessing the particular features of advantage before enumerated as desirable, but' which obviously is susceptible of modiflcation in its form, proportions detail construction and arrangement of parts without'departing from the principle involved or sacrificing any of its advantages.
While in order to comply with the statute, the
- invention has been described in language more or less specific as to structural features, it is to be understood that the invention" is not limited to the specific features shown, but that the meansand construction herein disclosed comprise the preferred form of several modes of putting the invention into effect, and the invention is therefore claimed in any of its forms or modifications within the legitimate and valid scope of .the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: 1. A writing machine wherein arotary platen roll and associated frictional feeding devices collectively advance superposed piles of record ma terial to a writing position upon rotation of the platen, characterized by a pin type feeding device mounted in eccentric relation with the platen roll and engageable collectively with all the plies of the record material" to positively advance the record material to the writingposition alternately with periods of advancement by the frictional feeding means, a swinging carrier for the pin type feeding device by the to and fro motion of which thepin type feeding device is shiftedinto and out of feeding relation with the record materiaL. 1 1
2; A writing machine hy /ing a platenanda As illustrated in Fig. 8 the inwriting position past which record material is progressively advanced, characterized by frictional feedin means for feeding superposed plies of record material past the writing position without'maintenance of registry, a pin type feeding device for positively feeding the record material past the writing position while maintaining registry of superposed plies thereof,the respective feeding means being operative to advance all of the plies of record material either impositively or positively at equal rates of speed, and guide means for defining alternate paths of travel of the record material relative to the pin type feeding device whereby ,the record material may be directed at will into or out of interengaging relation with the pin type feeding device.
3. A writing machine wherein a friction feeding device including feed rollers one of which functions as a platen operate to feed record material past a writing position, characterized by a pin feeding device removably mounted in offset relation with respect to said platen and engageable with the record material alternately with the frictional feedingdevice for advancing the record material at substantially the same rate of speed, said pin feeding device being pivotally mounted for swinging movement into and out of operative position.
4. A writing machine wherein a friction feed device is engageable with record material to ad vance the material past a writing position, characterized by a pin feeding device also engageable with the record material alternately with the friction feed device and a support for said pin feeding device removably carriedv by the writing machine, said support including means permitting the movement of the pin feeding device into and out of operative position and actuating means for the respective feeding devices by which the record material is advanced at the same rate of speed by each feeding device.
5. A writing machine including a friction feeding device, and a pin feed device 'altemately engageable with record material to advance the.
material past a writing position at substantially equal rates of speed, and a common mounting for the friction and pin feed devices pivotally mounted for oscillation about an axis offset with respect to the said feed devices and adapted to present said devices alternately in operative position by its oscillatory movement.
6. A writing machine wherein superposed plies of record material are progressively advanced past a platen and a writing position by frictional feeding means without regard to registry of superposed plies thereof, characterized by a pin type feeding device eccentrically mounted with respect to the platen for positivelyfe'eding the record material past the writing position, while maintaining superposed plies thereof in registry, actuating means for operating the frictional feeding means and the pin type feeding device to advance all the plies of the record material at substantially equal rates of speed by either one such means, and guide means for defining the path of travel of the record material, the path of travel of the record material and the pin type feeding device being variable one relative to the other to effect intermittent operative interengagement thereof.
7. An optionally selective dual feeding means fora writing machine including a rotary platen roll, about which record material is circumferentially advanced past a writing position, frictional feeding means cooperating with the platen to advance the record material past the writing position, a pin wheel feeding device engageable in marginally punched holes in the record material for positively feeding the record material past the writing position independently of the frictional feeding means, an oscillatory carrier common to the frictional feeding means and to the pin wheel feeding device, and control means for oscillating the carrier to effect alternate feeding engagement of the frictional feeding means and the pin wheel feeding device with the record material.
8. A writing machine having optionally selective dual record material feeding means effective alternately for collectively feeding all of the superposed plies of a manifolding assembly either frictionally or positively past a writing position, each to the exclusion of the. other, characterized by a rotary pin type feeding device mounted in eccentric relation beyond the periphery of the platen and engageable in spaced holes in the manifolding material for positively collectively advancing all of the record material plies past the writing position to the exclusion of the frictional feeding means, and selective guide means defining alternative paths of travel through which the record material may be advanced by the respective feeding devices.
9. A writing machine having optionally selective dual record material feeding means effective alternately for collectively feeding all of the superposed plies of amanifolding assembly either frictionally or positively past a writing position, characterized by a rotary pin-type feeding device mounted in eccentric relation to and beyond the periphery of the platen roll operable for collectively feeding all of the plies of a manifolding assembly past the writing position independently of the operation of the frictional feeding meansfand a deflector for guiding the record material out of feeding relation with the pin type feeding means when the frictional feeding means is in operation. 4
10. A writing machine having optionally selective dual record material feeding means eifective alternately for collectively feeding all of the superposed plies of a manifolding assembly either .frictionally or positively past a writing position,
assembly past the writing position independently of the operation of the other feeding means, the
pin type feeding means and frictional feeding means being mounted one in. advance of the other relative to the path of travel of the record material whereby such material idly passes one of the feeding means in its progress to the other feeding means and means associated with the respective feeding means for rendering either of the feeding means ineffective at the will of the operator during-the operation of the other.
11. A writingv machine having optionally selective dual record material feeding means effective alternately for collectively feeding all of the superposed plies of a manifolding assembly either frictionally or positively past a writing position,

A writing machine wherein frictional feeding rollers cooperate with a platen roll for frictionally advancing record .material past a writing position, characterized by a pin type feeding device mounted eccentrlcally relative to the platen roll beyond the periphery thereof and engageable in spaced holes inthe record material for feeding the record material past the writing position alternately with the feeding operation 'of the frictional rollers, and throw out means associated with the frictional rollers and pin type feeding devicefor alternating the feeding.

18. The combination with a machine progressively advanced about a rotary platen and past a writing position, of a super-structure mounted upon the machine, comprising a frame, a rotary'shaft mountedtherein, a gear carried by the shaft, an idler gear also mounted in said frame for intermeshing enent with the gear upon said shaft, a gear rotating in unison with the rotary platen, with which the idler gear simultaneously meshes, a pair of relatively spaced rotary pin wheel units carried by the shaft for unison rotation engageable in relatively spaced holes in the record material from the rear side thereof and axially adjustable to and from each other to accommodate record material of different widths, and recessed record material retaining members overlying the rotary pin units the recesses of which the eei pins of said pin wh'eel units extend through the holes in said record material to prevent displacement of for advancing the record material past'the writing position alternately with the feeding operation of the frictional rollers and a throw out means for rendering the pin type feeding device ineffective during operative periods of the frictional rollers.
1 6. In a writing machine, optionally'sele'ctive position in a predetermined path of travel, and. a movable support therefor uponwhich the pin type feeding device is mounted for bodily movement toward and from the path of the record material into and out of in r :aa relation therewith. p r
20. The combination with a'wri machine having a platen and a writing position past which record material is progressively advanced, of a rotary pin wheel unit for positively feeding the' record material past the writing position in a predetermined path of travel, and an oscillatory carrier for the pin wheel unit upon which the-pin wheel unit is mounted for to and fro bodily swinging motion toward and from the path of travel of the record material into and out of interengaging relation therewith.
21. In a front strike typewriting machine, a sheet feeding coupling having, in combination, a revoluble platen having at its ends recesses disposed circumferentially thereabout, a pair of bodily movable wheels having impaling pins engageable in marginal holes formed in the work sheet'that is fed between the pin wheels and the platen, the pins on the wheels entering within the recesses in the platen and a control means to carry the pin wheels away from the platen,

In a front strike typewriting machine, a sheet feeding couple having, in combination, a revoluble platen having at its ends recesses disposed circumferentially thereabout, a pair of bodily movable wheels having impaling pins engageable in marginal holes formed in the work sheet that is fed between the pin wheels and the platen, the pins on the wheels entering within the recesses in the platen, control means to carry the pin wheels away from the platen and means to latch the wheels away from the platen releasable at the will of the operator.
23. In a, front strike typewriting machine, a sheet feeding couple having, in combination, a revoluble platen having at its ends recesses disposed circumferentially thereabout, a pair of bodily movable wheels having impaling pins engageable in marginal holes formed in the work sheet that is fed between the pin wheels and platen, the pins on the wheels entering within the recesses in the platen, control means to carry the pin wheels away from the platen, a releasable set of feed rolls to run upon the bottom of the platen, springs to press said rolls against the platen and a control lever common to .the feed rollers and pin wheels for enabling simultaneous adjustment thereof relative to-the platen.
'24. In a front strike typewritingv machine, a sheet feeding couple having, in combination, a
revoluble platen having at its ends recesses disposed circumferentially thereabout, a pair of .bodily movable wheels having impaling pins engageable in marginal holes formed in the work sheet that is fed between the pin wheels and the platen, the pins on the wheels entering within the recesses in the platen, control means to carry said pin wheels away from the platen, a releasable set of feed rolls to run upon the bottom or the platen, an operative connection between the feed rolls and pin wheels for effecting simultaneous adjustment of the feed rolls and pin wheels relative to the platen.

27.-In a front-strike typewriting machine, a sheet-feeding couple having, in combination, a revoluble platen having recesses at its ends, a pair of wheels having impaling pins to fit in marginal holes formed in the work-sheet that is fed between the pin-wheels and the platen, the

having therein a slot, aseries of traveling feeding ins operative in a path of travel coincident with said slot and engageable in relatively spaced holes in the record material for advancing the material relative to the guide plate and past the writing position, and a carrier for the pins causing the pins to describe arcuate movements in reverse directions contiguous to the ends of the f slot by which the pins are projected through a swinging motion from beyond said guide plate through the slots thereof intoengagement within corresponding holes in the record material and are subsequently withdrawn therefrom through the slot by a swinging motion by which the record material is stripped from the pins preparatory to the return thereof to the material engaging ,end of the slot.
