UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES BALES, OF BIG PLAIN, OHIO IMPROVEMENTINMOLE-PLOWS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 22,928, dated February 15, 1859.
inafter described, by means of which I am enabled to arrange one or more plows upon a cutting-shaft in such manner-as to produce drains at any desired depth from the surface of the a Figure 1. isa perspective view of my improvement, showing the peculiar construction of the mole-plows and their arran gemcnt upon the cutting-shaft. Fig. 2 is a side view of the moleplow, showing the convex elevation of the hinged cap. Fig. 3 is a top view of the moleplow, showing the device for securing the same to the cutting-shaft, the hinged cap being removed.
A is a cutting-shaft, intended for attachment in the ordinary manner to a beam at its upper end, and formed ofsuitable metal, with nearly a cutting-edge at its forward part, so that it may pass easily through the soil and from its center to its after edge its sides converge, so as to leave little opening in the soil after its passage.
D D are adjustable mole-plows, formed of suitable metal, with sides open at the heel,
bulging at d, fitting closely the shaft A, and converging and uniting toward the cuttingpoint (1. The bulge d is formed for the purpose of efiecting lateral pressure, so that the sides of the drain may be left compressed and smooth after the passage of the plows 1) D.
g is a cap, hinged to the plows D by means of the bolt (1, formed with the flange g to cover the heel of the plows D, and with a convex elevation for the purpose of affording upward pressure, so that the opening in the soilcaused by the passage of the shaft A may be closed and the top of the drain left compressed and smooth, while at the bottom of the drain the soil receives no pressure, and is left loose aft-er thepassage of the shaft A.
e is a right-and-left screw, formed to work into both sides of the mole-plow at its heel, and by means of-which theplows D may besecured to or released from the shaft A, when required, for repairer adjustment. One or both themoleplows D may be used and one or both adjusted to the depth required for the drain. 7
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The adjustable mole-plows D d d d" g g e upon a cutting-shaft, A, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invent-ion I have hereunto set my hand.
MOSES BALES.
Witnesses H. E. CLIFTON, F. A. MCDOWELL.
