P. H. WHEELER.
Micrometer Watch Regulator. No; 229,215. Patented June 22, 1880.
WlTNESS ES mvEmoR' jazg I I q klldb'mt b I E ATTORN v EY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILLIP H. VVHEELEB, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS,
MICROMETER WATCH-REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,215, dated June 22, 1880.
Application filed April 22, 1880. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, PHILLIP H. WHEELER, of Springfield, in the county of Sanganion and State ofIllinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Mierometers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, an d exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ofthis specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure I of the drawings is arepresentation of a longitudinal section of my improved inicrometer, and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same.
This invention has relation to mircrometer movements to be used in connection with the regulator-indices of watches, chronometers,&c.; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement, in connection with the graduated arc and pointer of a revoluble circle or wheel carrying a swivel-connection for the pointer, and turned by means of a frictionrollcr operating against an inner are of the circle, being held in engagement by the elastic force of the graduated are, all as hereinafter fully shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates the outer watch-plate, and B the index or pointer of the regulator, designed to be arranged in connection with the balancespring in the usual manner. In the plate A, under the graduated are c, is located a circle or wheel, (I, having a bearing in the plate, which is preferably a circular recess, 0, in which the wheel dis seated. Connected to the circle (1 is a swivel or pivoted bearing, g, having in its head a slot or notch, which receives the pointer B, the sides of the slot or notch being parallel with the sides of the pointer, so as to move easily thereon as the circle is turned. This circle is provided with an inner are, it,
against which bears the friction-roller In, which is pivoted to the watch plate or frame, and is provided with a transverse notch or driveseat, whereby it may be turned to the left or right, carrying with it the circle and the pointer connected thereto by means of the swivel g.
The graduated are c is provided at each end with holes, which are made larger than the screws 8, by which it is secured to the plate, and is therefore adjustable, and is designed to have a bearing at 00 against the frictionroller 70, thereby serving as a spring to hold the roller against the inside are of the circle, sustaining the frictional engagement. This device enables the pointer of the regulator to be moved to the right or left in a slow and uniform manner, but with great facility, and without injury to the hair-spring, pointer, or other parts of the mechanism.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the regulatorpointer B and the circle (I, having the internal are, it, and the swivel-connection g, of the operating friction-roller [6, bearing against the internal are of said circle, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the regulatorpointer and the circle d, carrying a swivelconnection for said pointer, of the frictionroller 7;, bearing against an internal arc of said circle, and the graduated spring-arc 0, bearing against said roller, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
PHILLIP H. WVHEELER.
