WVILLIAM O. THORNTON, OF CASTLE BOOK, MISSOURI.
COMBINED FRUlT-CANNER AND WEIGHING-SCALES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,204, dated June 22, 1880.
Application filed May 1], 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM O. THORNTON, of Castle Rock, Osage county, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Fruit-Oanner and Weighing-Scales, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a device by means of which the weighing of canned fruit, vegetables, 850., can be conveniently and quickly effected.
' The invention consists of a hollow standard fixed upright on a suitable base and containing a vertically-adjustable bar, on the top of which is fixed a yoke or arch in whose ends s prin gactuated vertical plungers are adjusted; and it consists, further, of a pair of counterscales arranged about the foot of the hollow standard and supporting the revolving disks, upon which disks the cans are to rest when being sealed or weighed.
ligure 1 is a front elevation of the device, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same on line 00 00, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a crosssection on line y 3 Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
In the drawings, Arepresents the base of the device supporting the upright hollow standard 13, in the cavity of which is the vertically-adjusta e bar O, which bar O is held at any desired elevation by the thumb-screw D. On the t of the bar O is fixed the yoke or arch E, (h. 1 through whose socketed ends are passed the vertical plungers F F, that carry on their lower ends the disks a a and have on their upper ends the knobs or handles 1) b, by means of which they may be conveniently raised.
\Nithin. the sockets c c of this arch or yoke E the spiral springs encircle the shanks of the plungers F F, and, bearing on the transverse pins f f, force said plungers F F downward with a constant pressure.
G represents the scal Q, of which G is the platform, while the base thereof is identical with the base A of the device.
Resting upon the supports g g of the scales G, and pivoted thereon by their pivots h It, so that they may have a horizontal rotary movement, are the disks H H, provided at their peripheries with radial studs k, by means of (No model.)
which the disks H H may be conveniently turned.
In operating this device for canning, the bar O, with its attached arch or yoke E, is adjusted and secured at the proper elevation by the thumb-screw D, the point of adjustment being contingent upon the height of the can or cans to be operated upon.
The blocks m, that are pivoted on the base A, are swung beneath the shoulders of the sup ports 9 g, to hold said supports up, and thereby prevent pressure upon the scales G, and the filled can or cans (represented at L) are then placed on the revolving disks H and the plungers F F pressed on the tops or covers of said cans L by the spiral springs d (I, so as to hold said covers firmly down. Then any overflowing of the liquid contents of the cans L is wiped from them and the sealing-wax or other sealing substance or material is applied to secure the cover to the can. The operator, by taking hold of the studs 7t 7., turns said can L at will by turning the disk H. The pressure of the plunger F is continued until the sealing material has becomehardened sufficiently about the joint of the can and cover, and is then removed. lVhile one can is remaining in position for its sealing-wax to cool another can may be operated upon on the opposite side of the device.
WVhen it is desired to weigh a can and its contents, a suitable weight is placed on the arm n of the scales G, the can on one disk, H, and suitable weights 011 the other disk, H, the blocks m being first removed from beneath the supports g g and the plungers F F being retraeted.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent 1. A combined fruit-eanner and weighingscales, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of base A, hollow standard B, vertically-adjustable bar 0, yoke E, spring-actuated plungers F F, scales G, and pivoted rotary disks H H, as set forth.
2. In a combined fruitcanner and scales, the adjustable bar O and yoke E, in combination, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a combined fruit-eanner and scales, the combination, with the adjustable bar O and sooketed yoke E, of the spring-actuated plunthe scales G, substantially as herein shown and gers F I*, substantially as herein shown and described. described. 6. In a combined fruit-canner and scales, the
4. In a combined fruit-canner and scales, the combination, with the disks H H and scales 5 pivoted rotary disks H H, substantially as G, of the supports 9 g and blocks mm, sub I 5 herein shown and described, whereby the cans stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
are supported and revolved as set forth. WILLIAM CLARK THORNTON.
5. In a combined fruit-canner and scales, the Witnesses: combination, with the standard B, adjustable AUGUSTUS KLEINSORGE, IO bar and yoke O E, and rotary disks H H, of MARTIN BODE.
