CUTTER Filed Nov. 17, 1941 2 Sheets-Sheet l Im'enim' Patented Aug. 4, 1942 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cutter attachments especially adapted for sewing machines intended for binding, piping and various types of trims on garments.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a cutting attachment for sewing machines adapted to be placed at the rear of the foot mechanism of a sewing machine and adapted to be operated by the operator as she completes each garment, thus dispensing with the use of scissors or other unhandy cutting implement.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the cutter.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the device with the hood removed.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view with the hood removed.
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the movable blade.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 denotes a substantially L-shaped base having openings 6 therein through which securing means can be disposed for securing the base to the top of a sewing machine just rearwardly of the usual foot mechanism thereof.
A post 1 rises from the intermediate portion of the base 5 and is bifurcated at its upper end to receive an intermediate portion of a beam 8 which has an opening at this point to receive a pin 9 which extends transversely through the post 1. Thus the beam 8 is rockably supported.
The beam 8 at one end is constructed to provide a reduced pintle l fitting into a slot H in a lever [2. This lever i2 is constructed of an elongated piece of strap metal which is twisted at its intermediate portion as at l3 and extended with its flat side up to define an elongated hand tap lever [4. The inner end of this lever [2 extends into the bifurcated upper end portion of a second post and a pin 16 extends through this post I5 to pivot the lever l2 thereto.
Extending outwardly from one end of the base 5 is a fixed cutter blade [1 secured to the base 5 by screws Hi. This blade I! has a shoulder portion l9 to which is secured an inclined guard 20. At the inner side of the blade I! and guard 2a is a movable cutter blade 2| which is rockably supported on a threaded member 22 which has a head, and interposed between this head and the blade 2! and intended to maintain the blade 2| against the blade I! is a compression spring Reference character a denotes the cutting edge of the blade, the blade having a rearwardly extending portion 1) which is bifurcated as at c to receive a roller 24 carried by the adjacent end of the beam 8.
A looped spring member 25 has one end anchored in the post 1 while its other end is secured to the blade attached end of the beam by a screw or the like 26. This spring 25 serves to normally hold the blade 2| in raised position as shown in Figure 4.
A hood 2! corresponding in shape to the shape of the base 5 is disposed over the base 5 and screws 28 can be disposed through openings therein and driven into the tops of the posts 1 and [5.
Obviously a light touch on the lever Id by the operator of a sewing machine will cause a quick downward movement of the movable blade 2|.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
A cutter of the character described comprising a base, a lever pivoted at one end upon the base, a beam fulcrumed at an intermediate portion thereof from the base, a stationary blade projecting from the base, a rockable blade having a slotted leg portion mounted in juxtaposition and being cooperative with the stationary blade, one end of the beam being engaged with the lever and adapted to be operated by the latter, a pin projecting laterally from the other end of the beam and into the slot of the leg and a spring interposed between the base and the pin for normally tending to urge the rockable blade to open position.
