ATTORNEYS,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS RAGAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HYDRANT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,182, dated June 22 1880. Application led April 10, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, THOMAS RAGAN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Hydrant, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a non-freezing hydrant that can be disconnected from the water-main and removed for repairs or other purpose without digging or excavating about it.
The invention consists of a foot-valve form-` ing the lower end of the discharge-pipe, and rotating in avalve-chamber that is fixed within a globe-couplin g that is permanently attached to the watenmain 5 and, further, of a locking device whereby the valve-ch am ber may be locked with the discharge-pipe, so that both can be together disconnected from the watermain and withdrawn for repairs, Snc.
Fi gnre 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of the hydrant. Fig. 2is a cross-section on line x fr, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line yy, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line z z, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the case of the hydrant, provided with cover a. B is the discharge-pipe, provided with adischarge-opening, b,and an airhole, b', and having fitted aboutthis upper section, and above the shoulder c, a sleeve, G, to which sleeve C the spout D is connected. A spiral spring, D', placed about the discharge-pipe B, between the sleeve and shoulder c, presses said sleeve C upward on the conical swell of the pipe B with sufficient force to prevent any leakage at the joint formed by them.
E is the conical foot-valve forming the lower end of the discharge pipe B, and having a lateral openin g, f, for the admission of water from the water-main, and provided with a wasteopening, g.
F is acollar secured about the upper end of the valve E, and provided with a lug or stop, h.
G is the conical valvechamber tting over and inclosing the valve E, and held in place by a nut, k, turned onto the screw 7c' in the end ofsaid valve E. This valve-chamber G has an opening or port, lo, for the admission of water from the main, and is provided with a threaded collar, m, having a broad. shoulder, n, and an upward-projecting lug or stop, 0, with which stop o the stop h comes in contact when the discharge-pipe B is turned.
H is the waste-pipe, communicating, through the under face of the shoulder u, with the interior of the valve-chamber G, and curving upward to discharge the waste-water upon the joint formed between the cap L and the discharge-pipe B.
L is a screw-cap tting about the dischargepipe B, and screwing down upon the collar m of the valve-chamber G, thereby holding said valve-chamber G and valve E together, and also forming a chamber about the joint between said valve and valve-chamber E G.
M is the globe-coupling for connecting the hydrant with the water-main, and into this coupling M the valve-chamber G is screwed, as shown in Fig. l, thereby attaching the said hydrant to the said water-main. It will be seen that the swell or globe of this coupling M permitsV a constant supply of water to the valve-chamber G in whatever position said chamber may be.
As shown in the drawings, the several parts are in position for water to iiow through the hydrant, the supplyr ports or openings fp of the valve E and valve-chamber G, respect ively, are coincident, and the discharge-opening b of the discharge-pipe B and the spout D connect with each other, so that the water from the main shall flow up through said pipe B and discharge.
P is the handle or lever whereby the discharge-pipe. B is turned for the purpose of letting the water on or shutting it off from the y said hydrant, said handle P being secured on the top of the rectangular prolongation of the pipe B, above the square shoulder B of said prolongation.
Q is the cross-bar set over and upon the rectangular prolongation of the discharge-pipe B, above the handle P, to hold the parts vertically in position.
When the handle P is moved laterally to shut olf the iiow of water through the hydrant, the pipe and valve B E are thereby together turned, so that the port or opening fof the valve E is moved from opposite the port or opening p of the valve-chamber G, the wasteopening g of the valve E is brought in coincidence with the waste-pipe H, and the air-hole b of the discharge-pipe B is brought opposite the spout D. Consequently the Water from the main ceases to lioW through the hydrant, and air being admitted through the spout D and air-hole b permits the Water remaining in the pipe B to discharge, through the Waste port or opening g, into the Waste-pipe H, whereby said water is discharged upon the joint formed between the cap L and discharge-pipe B, in order to Wash the dirt and gravel from about said joint.
If it be desired tol remove the valve E for the purpose of inspection or repair, the crossbar Q is removed, the handle P taken of, the spout D removed, and a Wrench is then applied to the square shoulder B and. turned. The stops o and h then come in contact, thereby causing the Valve G to turn with the pipe B and become unscreWed from the globe-coupling M, When all the parts may be Withdrawn together, leaving the coupling M connected with the Water-main.
Should any leak occur in the hydrant after the Water is shut off, the water will show itself' at the spout D, and the parts can then at once be taken up, as set forth, for repair.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a hydrant, the combination, With the discharge-pipe B, collar F, provided with stop 7L, and valve-chamber G, of the screw-cap L, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a hydrant, the combination, with the valve-chamber G, of the upward-curvin g wastepipe H, substantially as herein shown and de,- scribed, whereby the Waste-water is discharged from the hydrant about the joint between the pipe B and cap L, as set forth.
THOMAS RAGAN.
