Description

B.. PHILLIPS. A Puddling Furnao.,
No. 229,177. Patented June H22, `1880'.
l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN PHILLIPS, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
PUDDLING-FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,177, `dated June 22, 1880.
Application led September 24, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN PHILLIPS, ot' Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Puddling-Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to provide what may be properly termed a combined puddling and crucible furnace;77 in other words, a furnace in which the operations of puddling iron and of melting steel or other metallic substances in crucibles may bel simultaneously carried on.
The invention comprises a tire-box having benches placed respectivelyr at its front and back, and with doors placed coincident with said benches in such a manner that crucibles may be placed upon the benches to be used in melting metal or any desired or suitable material by means of the same llame used or utilizedin the operation of puddling.
The invention also comprises the novel coinbination of the puddling-chamber with the parts aforesaid.
By means ofthe combinations just hereinbefore specified the apparatus may be used for the double functions` of an ordinary pud- (lling-furnace and of a furnace for melting steel or other materials in crucibles, the operations of puddling and melting in crucibles being carried on either simultaneously or singly, as the exigency of the Work may require.
Figure lis a vertical longitudinal section, Fig. 2 a horizontal section, and Fig. 3 a vertical transverse section, of an apparatus made according to my said invention.
A is the fire-box of the puddling-furnace, and B that portion of said furnace which receives and holds the molten iron during the puddling operation, these parts and those of their accessories essential or relating particularly to the puddling being of any ordinary or suitable construction, and consequently requiring no detailed description here.
Provided Within the fire-box A are o'ne or more benches for sustaining crucibles in a position calculated to expose them to the inost effective action of the flame or incandescent fuel in the lire-box. Preferably there are two of these benches, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2 and indicated by the reference letters O C, there being one at the back of the fire-boxthat is to say, at the side farthest from B-and the other at the front or opposite side of said tire-box. In the Wall of the tire-box, and coincident with the adjacent ends of the benches C C, are openings provided with doors D D, and through which the crucibles indicated at a may be placed upon or Withdrawn from the benches by means of the appliances ordinarily used for liftingv and moving crucibles.
In the use and employment of the apparatus the operation of puddling proceeds in the usual Way, simultaneously with which the coutact of the ame with the crucibles on the benches (l G, together with the intense heat radiated or emitted from the incandescent fuel, is sufficient (Without in the least inipairing the efficiency of the puddling operation) to heat the crucibles to any degree required for melting their contents of steel or other suitable metallic or other material.
What I claim as my invention is- I 1. The fire box having the benches C G placed respectively at its front and back, and with the doors B D placed coincident with said benches, all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination of the chamber or portion A of a puddling-furnace with the tire-box having the benches G (l placed respectively at its. front and back, and the doorsBD placed coincident With said benches, all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
BENJAMIN PHILLIPS.
