Description

'0. E. JONES. Check Row Corn Marker.
No. 229,140. Patented June 22, I880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. JONES, OF GREENCASTLE, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF OF HISRIGHT TO GARNER M. TRIPP, OF SAME PLACE.
CHECK-ROW CORN-MARKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,140, dated June 22, 1880. Application filed February 12, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. JoNEs, of Greencastle, in the county of Jasper and State of Iowa, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Row Corn-Markers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification. 7
Figure l is a front view, Fig. 2 is a top plan, and Fig. 3 is a side view, of my improved corn marker.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to check-row cornmarkers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the frame of the marker, which is provided with an axle, B, supported upon the transporting-wheels O O, which carry the machine.
To the front side of frame A, near the tongue T, are pivoted two beams or semi-axles, D D, 0 having at their extreme ends spindles E, upon whichthe marking-Wheels F E are journaled. Links or bails G G, pivoted to the front side of frame A, near the free ends of the semiaxles D D, confine the motion of the latter,-
and prevent them frombeing thrown out of 3 5 position.
In operation, the frame of the machine is carriedupon the transportingwheels O C, while the marking-wheels F F, being journaled upon the pivoted stub-axles or semi-axlesD D, adapt 4o themselves to any unevenness in the ground.
I am aware that short axles hinged to the ends of a main axle and operated by levers have been used before; also, that a long axle and a short axle, each having wheels, have been 4 5 connected and operated by levers under the control of the driver to raise either set of wheels 7 at pleasure; and neither of these constructions is claimed herein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with the frame A, supported upon the transporting-wheels G O, of the stub-axles D D, pivoted to the front of said 5 frame and having marking-wheels F F, and the links or bails G Gr, pivoted'to the front of the frame A and confining the stubaxles D D, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses' CHARLES E. JONES.
Witnesses:
SIDNEY \VILLIAMS, JAMES ADKIN.
