Description
M.,R. FORY & W. L. HEGEMAN.
'Water Closet.
' Patented June 22,1880.
I No. 229,112.
UNITED STATES PATENT Gretna.
MARTIN R. FORY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., AND WILLIAM L. HEGEMAN, OF JERSEY CITY, N. J ASSIGNORS TO MARTIN R. FORY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATER-CLOSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,112, dated June 22,. 1880.
Application filed August 22, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARTIN R. FORY, of New York city, New York, and WILLIAM L. HEGEMAN, of Jersey City, New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Water-Closets, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in valves and valve-operating devices for waterclosets; and the object of our invention is to provide for the free escape of the contents of the basin, to effectually seal the outlet Without the use of water, and to improve the devices for operating the valve. These objects we attain in the manner which we will ,now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the application of our improvements to a portable water-closet.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portable water-closet with our improvements Fig. 2, aplan view of the basin; and Fig. 3, a sectional plan on the line 1 2, Fig. 1.
A is a casing, to the upper edge of which is adapted the seat a of the basin B, a tubular ring, I), of rubber, or other elastic ring, insuring a tight joint between the seat and easing.
In the seat a, and in a bracket, 11, secured to one side of the basin, are formed bearings for a rod, D, having at the upper end a handle, 6, and at the lower end an arm, f, which carries a valve,E, adapted to the opening at the lower end of the basin B.
The rod D is so adapted to its bearings that it can be moved up and down and turned laterally therein, a plate, 12, however, adapted to a squared portion of the rod, serving to limit the turning movement by coming into contact with a shoulder, m, on the bracket d. (See Fig. 3.) A spring, a, surrounding the rod D'tends to elevate the same.
J is an elevated water-reservoir, from which a flexible tube, j, extends to the basin B, with which the said tube communicates through the usual opening 70. The passage of water from the reservoir into the tube j is determined by the operation of a valve, 19, to which is connected a cord or chain, s,passin g over'a pulley, t, at the top of the reservoir, and hanging down outside the same, the lower end of the pendent cordbeing provided with aring, v, or equivalent device, which is within convenient reach of the occupant of seat a.
The casing A contains avessel, M, which is arranged immediately beneath the basin B, for 5 5 receiving the soil, 850., discharged from the latter.
The discharge-valve E has a body of Wood or metal, covered with rubber or like elastic material, w, and beneath the covering, and at a point where the valve comes into contact with its seat on the edge of the opening in the basin D, is arranged a ring, 00, of elastic material.
When the water-closet is not in use the parts are in the position shown by full lines in sel M, after which the rod D is so operated as to restore the valve E to its original position, where it effectually seals the lower end of the basin and prevents the escape of foul vapors from the interior of the casing B.
Being independent of a water-seal in makin g a tight joint, our improved water-closet can be used in the coldest weather without danger of being rendered inoperative by the freezing of the water in the seal. 7
Instead of first depressing and then turning the rod D by hand, the rod might be provided with a scroll-cam so arranged in respect to a stationary pin that the downward movement of the rod would be simultaneous with the turning of the same.
The basin and its attachments may be applied to the seat of an ordinary privy or may be used in connection with a fixed water-closet.
We do not desire to claim, broadly, a valve carried by a rod which is adapted to receive a 5 longitudinal and vibrating motion to apply the valve to or remove it from its seat; but
We claim as our invention-,-
1. The combination of the basin having a valve-seat With a valve, E, and rod 1), passing 10o through the seat and carrying the valve at its 111 testimony whereof we have signed our lower end, and provided with a handle at the names to this specification in the presence of upper end, as set forth. two subscribing witnesses.
2. The combination of the basin, the valve 5 E, the rod D, and spring at, as set forth. MARTIN RUDOLPH FORY.
3. The combination of the rod D, the stop- WILLIAM L. HEGEMAN. plate 5, and the bracket d, having a shoulder, m, as described. Witnesses: t 4. The valve having the elastic covering 20 ANDREWSPATZ,
10 and internal elastic ring, x, as set forth. WALTER S. OONANT.
