UNITE-1o STATES PATENT ()FFTCE.
JAMES. R. JOHNSTON, OF SOMEBSWORTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
KNIFE AND FORK HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,998, dated June 22, 1880.
Application filed April 26, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES R. JOHNSTON, of Somersworth, county of Strafford, State of New Hampshire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Knife and Fork Holders; and I hereby declare the following to be a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is an isometrical perspective view, showing the holder in use.
My invention relates to that class of knife and fork holders which are designed for table use; and it consists in a novelconstruction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, by which a simpler, cheaper, and more'effective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
In the drawing, A represents the base or foot of the holder, B the body or standard, and G the top or handle, which is connected to the standard by a screw (not shown) a1- rangedverticallyin the top of the same. Disposed between the standard and handle there is a horizontally-arranged plate or disk, D, provided with T-shaped slots E in its periphery for receiving and holding the forks a a, as shown. There are also series of narrow elongated slots, Gr, arranged radially around the top 0 for receiving and holding the knives d d, the last named slots being dis- (No model.)
posed opposite the blanks or spaces between the slots E and midway between the outer edge of the disk and its center in such a manner that when the knives are in position, as shown, they will not interfere with the forks, and vice versa.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is The improved knife and fork holder herein described, the same consisting of the base A, body 13, top 0, and disk D, the said disk be ing provided at or near its periphery witha series of T-shaped slots, and being also provided, between its center and its periphery, with aseries of radiallydisposed straight slots, each of the said T-slots being open at its stern and short at its top, whereby itis adapted to receive the fork by the shank and support the same by the edges of the handle at the ends of the main portion of the said T-slots, and each of said straight slots being elongated and narrow, whereby it is adapted to receive the knife by its blade and support the same by the sides of the handle at the sides of the said straight slot, the said straight slots being arranged opposite the spaces between the T- slots, whereby the knives and forks will be out of contact with each other, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described.
