Description
June 9, 1942. o. SCHLACTER COMBINED S WEEPER AND DUST PAN Filed Aug. 12, 1941 ATTO R N EYS Patented June 9, 1942 COINED SWEEPER AND DUSTPAN Olga Schlacter, Rocksprings, Wyo.
Application August 12, 1941, Serial No. 406,545
2 Claims.
My invention relates to a combined sweeper and dust pan and has as one of the principal objects thereof the provision of a device of the above described character wherein the sweeper is connected to the dust pan in a manner whereby said sweeper may be operated to a position within th rear of the dust pan when it is desired to use the dust pan without operating the sweeper in connection therewith.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, durable in use, efiicient in operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view, partly in section, of my invention.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 4.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the latch clips,
As illustrated in the drawing, I provide a dust pan 5 formed with botttom and side walls 6 and 1 respectively and with a rearwardly disposed arcuate-shaped brush receiving section 8 on which is fashioned a rearwardly extending handle 9 for operating the device. The side walls I are each provided with front and rear spaced pair of upper and lower spaced detents Ill extending outwardly from the inner faces of said side walls. The front pairs of said detents overlie and detachably secure to said side walls oppositely disposed ears H formed on latch clips l2 through which extend the parallel side portions l3 of a U-shaped rod I4, the cross portion I5 of said rod constitutes a shaft on which is rotatably mounted a sweeper 18 comprising a brush ll equipped with end rollers IS. The free ends of the portions are fashioned with right angularly disposed sections I9 extending through openings 20 formed in the side walls 1 between the respective pairs of the detents.
As illustrated in the drawing, the sweeper I6 is disposed forwardly of the front end of the dust pan and serves to sweep dust and the like into the dust pan as the latter is operated forwardly over a surface. When it is desired to use the dust pan without the sweeper, the clips [2 are moved axially on the portions 13 and out of engagement with the front pairs of detents l0 whereupon the sweeper is pivoted on the sections [9 and disposed Within the sweeper receiving section 8. When the sweeper is thus disposed, the clips l2 are moved into engagement with the rear pairs of detents l0 whereby said sweeper is maintained in latched condition within said section 8. A reverse operation serves to reposition the sweeper in front of the dust pan for use therewith.
It is obvious that the invention is not confined to the herein described use therefor as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation, which are capable of extended application in advance forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, a dust pan open at the front and having a channel shaped portion at the rear, a bracket pivotally connected to the sides of the pan and having a brush rotatably mounted on its intermediate portion, the said bracket being movable to assume a forwardly projecting position to dispose the brush transversely in front of the pan in sweeping arrangement and movable to a rearwardly disposed position to fit the brush in the channel portion at the rear of the pan, and means on the bracket and sides of the pan for releasably fastening the brush in forward operative position or in rearward inoperative position.
2. In a device of the character described, a pan having a mainly fiat bottom, a pair of vertical side walls and a rear wall, the rear portion of the said pan being shaped to provide a transversely extending brush receiving channel, a U- shaped member having parallel side arms and a cross rod, the ends of the side arms having outwardly directed pivots extending through apertures at the center portions of the side walls, a cylindrical sweeper brush rotatably mounted on the cross rod of the said U-shaped member, a pluralit of spaced projections formed inwardly of the said side walls, and a fastening member slidably fitted on each side arm releasably engageable with the said projections for fastening the U-shaped member in a forwardly directed position with the roller disposed in sweeping arrangement in front of the pan and operative to engage rearward projections for fastening the said U-shaped member in rearwardly directed position with the sweeper brush fitted within the channel shaped rear portion of the pan.
