Description

(No Model.)
J. E. THOMSON. Sealing-Press, Punches, &0.
No. 228,572. Patented June, 1880.
n. PETEns. PMOTG LlmD RAP UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. THOMSON, BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
SEALING PRESS, PUNCH, ato.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,572, dated June 8, 1880.
Application filed April 16, 1880.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES E. THOMSON, of Buffalo, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sealing Presses, Punches, Griping-Tools, Shears, Sac.; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of thisspeciiication, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sealingpress with my improvements attached. 'Fig'. L is a sectional view of the same; Fig. 3, detail to be referred to.
My invention relates to the means of applying and gradually increasing the power of a sealing-punch; andA it consists in the combination of devices hereinafter explained and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents the sealinglevers, pivoted together in the usual manner, and B represents the hand-levers, pivoted to the levers A at a, and pivoted together at b. These hand-levers are each formed with an inwardly-arranged cam, e, as shown in Fig. 2, and these cams are brought into play on each other as the hand-levers approach, whereby a gradually-increasing power of great force is transmitted directly from the hand-levers to the sealing-point.
I am aware that a somewhat similar increase of power on the punching-lever has been obtained by interposed independent toothed eccentrics connected by links and (No model.)
separated pivots; but such isnot my invention.
In the outer ends of the punching-levers are placed the dies C, provided with the annular groove o, into which iits the spring-pin D, whereby I ain enabled to quickly change the die when desired by simply touching the pin, thereby avoiding the use of screws or screw-drivers.
To the inner side of the hand-levers I secure the iiat springs E, the inner end of the one being bifurcated at d, and the other being supplied with a tongue, d', fitting into the bifurcation, as shown in Fig. l. These two springs, bearing against each other and having an easy play between the levers, secure a free motion to the levers at all points of their movement.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The sealing-levers A, in combination with the hand-levers B, having the integral cams e, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The sealing-levers A, provided with the spring-pins D and grooved dies O, in combination with the hand-levers B, having the integral eccentric cams c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The levers A and B, in combination with the springs E, provided with the bifurcation d and tongue d', substantially as and for the purpose described.
' t JAMES E. THOMSON.
