H. D. SNOW. Governor for Water-Wheels, 8L0.

HERVEY D. SNOW, OF WATERFORD, ASSIGN OR TO ROBERT JOHNSTON, OF OOHOES, NEW YORK.
GOVERNOR FOR WATER-WHEELS, 84c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,566, dated June 8, 1880,
Application filed Sept-ember 22, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERVEY D. SNOW, of \Vater-iord, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Governors for Water-WVheels, 850., of which the following is a correct specification.
In the regulators for water-wheels, steam-engines, &c., the governor is required to open the gate or valve wider when the speed slackens, and to partially close the same when the speed increases. With water-wheels especially a difficulty arises from the fact that the opening of the gate is slower in proportion than the closing, because when the machinery is running at the average speed the lessening of resistance to the power allows the momentum to increase and act rapidly upon the gate-moving screw or other device, and the gate is moved more quickly in closing thanit would be if the speed of the motor decreased below the standard speed; hence it takes a longer time to recover the normal speed from a less speed than it does to restore the normal speed from a higher speed.
My present invention relates to the combination of governors and cams with the valve or gate-actuating mechanism, whereby said mechanism will be rendered more rapid in its operation when the speed lessens below the average than when the speed increases above the average, thereby bringing the motor back to the normal speed from a higher or lower speed with uniformity.
In operating the gates of water-wheels the mechanism may continue to turn the screw or stem after the gate has been moved to its extreme point in opening or closing, and in so doing injure some of the parts. This mayarise when the circumstances of resistance are unusual and the regulating device does not become fully effective in bringing the speed of the motor to its normal condition.
I combine with the device that actuates the stem of the gate a friction-clutch between the stem and its motor so that the motor can turn the screw; but when the resistance to the movement of the gate becomes too great the friction-clutch will yield and prevent injury to the parts.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the gate-actuating mechanism and section of the governor-standard, and Fig. 2 represents the screw-shaft for the gate partly broken open, and shows the friction-clutch.
The governor balls or weights to c are of any desired character. They are pivoted. at bin the yoke 0 upon the tubular shaft (1, to which a revolving motion is given by bevel-gearing or otherwise.
The shaft 61 is supported by the standard 6 and frame f, and through the tubular shaft (1 the rod h passes. At the upper end of this rod h there is a jaw, against which the governor-cams act, and this jaw may also hold the rollers i to lessen friction.
The governor balls or weights are provided with segmental bars that extend laterally from the arms, and the lower edges of these form cams I, that are above the rollers i, and such cams slide adjacent to each other as the goveruor-balls move. The portions 2 of the canr faces are more rapid curves than the portions 3.
The portions4=of the cams rest upon the rollers i when the governor is revolving at the required speed. If the speed increases so as to move the governor-balls, say, ten degrees, the end motion given to the rod It will be less than the end motion of it that would result from the speed decreasing and the governor-balls falling ten degrees. By thus varying the movement given to the rod h by the cams the governor valve or gate that receives its motion direetly or indirectly from the rod It will be moved in such a manner that the speed will be increased from too slow aspeed to the average as quickly as it will be reduced from too high a speed to the average.
I have shown my improvement as applied with the water-wheel regulator similar to that patented by me July 14, 1868, No. 7 9,870.
The pawls s 8 stand in opposite directions above the toothed wheel a. The pivots of these that has its fulcrum at 7, and the shorter end of this lever is below the rod h, and the upper end of his kept in contact with the cams'lby the said weighted lever t, and hence as the governor-balls rise or fall the rod h, weighted lever, and the pawl-lifter all move together and bring the pawl 8! into action if the speed becomes too low, and the pawl 8 into action if the speed is too high,-so as to restore the motor to its normal speed with regularity and uniformity.
Between the shaft 1) and the shaft t of the gate-regulating screw there are the bevel-gears o and w and the gear '1) is secured to the shaft 19 by a friction-clutch, the same being formed by the divided hub of said wheel bolted together by the screws .10, so as to clamp the shaft with greater or less force. If the gate is moved to the extreme point in. either direction, this friction-clutch allows the gear to to remain stationary, while the shaft 12 may still be moved by the pawls, thus preventing injury to the parts.
I am aware that governor-ball arms have been provided with cam-levers acting on toggle-bars. In my governor the cam acts directly upon the vertical rod, and the cam is shaped so as to act in the manner described.
I am also aware that the connections in governors have been made by friction-clutches acted upon by levers to increase or decrease friction. 'In my apparatus the friction is uni form, and serves to insure the movement of the parts except when the limit of motion is reached.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, in a governor, of the weights a, pivoted at b, the segment-bars extending laterally from the arms of the governor-balls, and having'on their under side the cams l, the faces of which are curved in the manner and for the purposes set forth, the rod h, having a jaw provided with a friction-roller,
41, at its upper end, against which the cams act. the lever t, for raising the rod h into contact with the cams, and means for revolving the governor, substantially as set forth.
2. In a water-wheel regulator, the combination, with the mechanism for raising or lowering the gate, of a frictional clamp at the hub of the gear-wheel, for connecting the same to the shaft, all constructed and arranged as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 17th day of September, 1879.
HERVEY D. SNOW.
