HORSE-POWER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,504, dated June 8, 1880.

Application filed April 27, 1880.

To all whom ti may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at (Jentreton, county of Burlington, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Ii'nprovementin Horse-Powers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specication and accompanyingdrawings, in which- Figure l is a top or plan view of the horsepower embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof in line a m, Fig. 1.

r 5 My invention consists of a horse-powcrhavin g means for releasing the winding-drum and preventing the reversal ofthe same, the parts being combined and operating as hereinafter fully set forth.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a frame, to the top and bottom cross-pieces, a b, of which is mounted a vertical shaft, B. 0 represents a tongue, which is connected to the upper end of the shaft B above the cross- 2 5 piece a, and to which the animal is hitched, and depending from the said tongue near its connection with the shaft B is a hinged pawl, D, which is adapted to engage with the teeth of a circular rack or ratchet, E, secured to the 0 top cross-piece, a, the shaft B passing freely through a central opening of said rack or ratchet E.

On the lower end of the shaft B is loosely fitted a winding-drum, F, and above the same is a clutch, G, which has both a rotary and vertical sliding connection with and on the said shaft B, and is adapted to engage with lugs on the drum F.

In order to raise or disengage the clutch G from the drum F, I may employ a lever, H, whose inner end is bifurcated and provided with pins, which project freely into a horizon tal groove in the clutch.

It will be seen that when the drum is to be rotated in order to wind the rope or chain thereon the clutch G is lowered, and as the animal carries around the tongue 0 power is communicated to the shaft B and clutch G, and thus to the drum.

When it is desired to release the drum to o stop the winding action or return the rope or chain, the lever B is operated in order to raise the clutch G, and thus the drum F is free or again loose on the shaft B.

During the rotation of the shaft the pawl D rides freely over the rack or ratchet E; but should the animal attempt to back, or there is an unusual strain on the rope or chain, and thus on the drum F, when the latter is operative, the pawl engages with one of the teeth of said rack or ratchet and acts as a stop to the rotation of the shaft and connected parts, as is evident in referring to Fig. 2.
